Nokia E65 Internet connection

Hi everyone
I’m a new Linux user, trying to move from Windows to OpenSUSE.
I have installed OpenSUSE 11.2, and am having a hard time trying to connect to the internet using my nokia E65. I have tried to configure the modem thru YaST and it keeps showing that my nokia E65 modem is not configured, but adds another modem every time I configure using the edit button i.e. modem0, modem1 etc.
when i finish the configuration I get pop ups on the bottom right conner:
Notification from network management
WLAN interface attached
Network interface attached
attached

but nothing happens afterwards.
When I connect the phone it shows that it is recognized as a modem (probably). but when I click on the icon so it connects to my service provider “econet” it just says activating with a red x in the conner, and still nothing happens!

the following are the screenshots (still not sure how to attach files on this forum), may someone assist, with that too.

Please help!!! I really want to move from Windows but this is what’s stopping me. the sooner I connect to the Internet through my phone, the sooner I leave Windows, since it’s the only way I can connect to the internet.

I have tried wvdial, and I got the following:
WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory

any advice is greatly appreciated!

There are users who may be able to help here, but it’s not me. I’m sure it will be a little difficult to do though. Sorry to sound so pessimistic.

If you want to post screens, we suggest you host the images at a site like imagebam.com

Thanks a lot for the quick reply
I hope someone out there has a solution.

I tried to put as many of them as I can, in case someone out there gets has a solution.

Are you using network manager
If not try it

When you open Yast - Network Settings make sure it is set to Network Manager Controlled as opposed to Traditional ifup

Reboot.

Try configuring your connection now. If the Network Manager icon is not in the panel sys tray, you may need to start it from the menu.

Internet connection is very popular now a days. Very useful information here. Its really helpful to lots of people. So, thanks for posting this.

thanks for the suggestion, but still not working.
I must say though this has inspired me to find out more.
I’m still trying to find out how to get the network manager from the menu/tray, but I have stumbled upon some interesting things.
wvdial worked once but I’m nolonger sure what I had done, but it was dialing the default settings.
I’m not sure if I should take this to another forum though, but I also noticed that even though I was logged on as root I still didn’t have the permission to configure some things like gnokii, kinternet, smpppd-c.config
I’l keep trying to work around this, any suggestions are welcome, & I will be posting my findings, maybe some linux beginners like me can learn something.

You should never login as root!!
If you had wvdial working, then it’s something to press on with. Though personally I would normally be worried about a machine that had been used as root, in your case, it might be ok, as you were not connected to the internert.

I’m not familiar with using mobile phones as modems under linux, but I have seen several (mostly Ubuntu) threads concerning this topic with the same model as yours.

Anyway, to start with (and assuming it is connected via usb cable), plug it in and type these commands in a terminal

lsusb
dmesg|tail

What output do you get?

You could also try

wvdialconf

to see if your phone is detected as a modem.

Now, I have seen references to the following device node being created by the driver for this device:

/dev/ttyACM0

You could see if it present in dmesg output, or

ls -l /dev/ttyACM*

That would be a start. Then you could configure as a modem with YaST, and use kinternet or wvdial to detect.

FWIW, similar approach here:

http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1243190.htm

As I said I’m still new, that’s not booting as root is a mistake I won’t make again then-thanks for the advice.
I have tried several solutions. Still finding it difficult to install wine a suggestion from the Ubuntu forum.
And several local Linux gurus and got similar results to the other user in this forum:

anyway my results are as follows:

Did you configure it properly with setserial?

Looks like the device node for your Nokia phone (=modem) has been created. Not sure why wvdialconf reported ‘ttyACM0<Info>: Device or resource busy’.

You might need to make sure your user is a member of the ‘dialout’ group for access. You can set this via YaST > Security and Users.

This guide might be helpful to you as well:

Connect your nokia phone with linux without pc suite!! « Tareq Alam

With the device plugged in, make a link to /dev/modem first. Open a terminal window and type ‘su -’ to become root, then do

ln -s /dev/ttyACM0 /dev/modem

Then see if you can configure it with YaST > Network Devices > Modem.

You can install kinternet to use as a graphical dialling utility.

I have created the link. now am not sure if kinternet is the same as Network Manager coz I have tried downloading it and found myself with the same Network Manager. or perhaps I was just doing something wrong.

Im not sure what to configure particularly, to get my user to be a member of the dial out group.

i’d seen a similar post before, tried it again this time all goes well but when i ‘wvdial’ my modem is still not active… will send post of my actual result-I’d have to reboot from windows to do that.

Network Manager is not kinternet. If you’ve downloaded the latter, you should find it in the menu (somewhere). Otherwise, you can launch from a terminal (as user) with ‘kinternet’.

Im not sure what to configure particularly, to get my user to be a member of the dial out group.

Its quite easy to add a user to a group. Here’s a graphical how to:

Glad to hear that you got some results with wvdial. The dial string in /etc/wvdial.conf probably contains an init string not suitable for you modem.

I’m not that familiar with these, and they depend on your modem hardware. You could try

Init2 = AT &F E0 V1 &D2 &S0 &C1 S0=0

You may need to post your /etc/wvdial.conf contents for further inspection if you still have problems.

Looks like your close though.

still having trouble installing kinternet is there any way I could download from terminal?
here’s my /etc/wvdial.conf

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = AT &F E0 V1 &D2 &S0 &C1 S0=0

Password=
Idle Seconds = 300
Modem Type = USB Modem
Stupid Mode = 1
Compuserve = 0
Baud = 460800
Auto DNS = 1
Dial Command = ATDT

I’m getting the following results with wvdial:

linux-j8xc:/home/simon # wvdial

→ Re-Sending: AT &F E0 V1 &D2 &S0 &C1 S0=0
→ Modem not responding.

I don’t know if I may have tempered with something critical.

My APN is: econet.net
when I’m dialing there is no username or password required.

this has been a great learning experience for a newbie.

See if this thread helps. Specifically, make sure NetworkManager is not configured to manage network connections.

It was the NetworkManager setting, it had to be in “traditional”. Thanks thanks and thanks again guys.

rotfl!

I’m loving this bit about linux, you sweat for what you know. but you gotta be humble to admit you don’t know everything, esp Windows gurus, not everything is automatic here.

Thanks once again.

Thats a good result. Thats what I like about Linux - at least you can get under the hood and configure pieces of the system to work in a way thats suits the user, unlike some proprietary OS’s…

How do we mark the thread as solved by the way?
