No wireless on netbook

Hello!

I installed on a Q10 air netbook OpenSuse 13.1 and have no working wireless.
(Don´t worry, the essential data will follow.)
The case is a little bit complicated, because the internal wireless adapter of the netbook is broken and an external USB adapter was plugged in.
I posted this problem in the german forum and got there the help of wolfi323. According to his advices I installed kernel 3.14 and updated the kernel-firmware-package. This resulted in blinking of a blue LED on the USB adapter, but not in a working wireless.
An additional problem is that when I try to configurate the network connection by the NetworkManager, all connections (wireless or cable) break down and I have to use YaST to reconfigurate.

Now the data:

First the output of ´/usr/bin/lsusb´:

[us 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:0158 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. USB 2.0 multicard reader
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 04ca:0030 Lite-On Technology Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Wolfi told me that the second line is that of my USB wireless adapter.

In the output of ´dmesg´ I found the following:

r8188eu: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned.

Could this be the necessary data?

´/usr/sbin/iwconfig´ delivered this:

Assuming that you want to connect to one of those access points in the scan
list, switching network control to NetworkManager, and using the system tray
applet to enter the security information should allow the connection.

Do you control that access point? If so, you have chosen the channel badly. The
channel selection is not like television, where every one is separate from all
the others. Wifi’s channels are spaced 5 MHz apart, but the actual band is 20
MHz wide. For 802.11g, this means that only channels 1, 6, and 11 do not
interfere with each other. On the other hand, channel 7 interferes with every
station on channels 6 and 11. That is not likely what you wanted.

I think, the bad channel is a minor problem, isn´t it? Probably I can deal later with that. It should not prevent the wireless from working.
The main problem seems to be, that I cannot use NetworkManager. It can be opened or started, but whenever I try to finish the configuration after entering the whole information, the networking collapses, also the wired connection. Then I can´t even ping my router/access point.

Yes, the bad channel selection might cause your connection to be unstable.

The log for NetworkManager is found in /var/log/NetworkManager. Look there for
clues. Saying that the network “collapses” is not very descriptive.

Sorry about the unprecise word “collapse”.
I changed the channel from 7 to 6, is that ok? The result is the same. No wireless connection.

Here the content of /var/log/NetworkManager of today:

Wolfi323 had already a look at this (on another day) and he wrote that you are the only one who can help me.

After the (miscalled) “collapse” also the wired connection is out of order. I have to return to YaST to go online, like now.

Channel 6 is better than 7; however, the best choice among 1, 6, or 11 will
depend on what AP’s show up in a scan. If none of your close neighbors have
wifi, then 6 is OK.

The first thing is that the driver for that broken RTL8180 or RTL8185 may be
interfering. Please do the following commands:

su -
echo "blacklist rtl8180" > /etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8180.conf

That will keep rtl8180 from loading. Now reboot. Can you connect now? If not,
please post the new contents of /var/log/NetworkManager, and the last part of
the output of dmesg - the part that talks about r8188eu.

No connection, sorry.

Here dmesg:

Networking is disabled by state file

Your problem is shown by the line above. Unfortunately, I do not know what
causes it.

If “Enable Networking” in the applet does not clear it, then try using YaST to
enable “ifup”. After you exit YaST, then start it again, and re-enable
NetworkManager. Sometimes, theat clears up a stale setting.

No success.
Another idea?

I got it.
I searched the file tree for directories named “NetworkManager” and found /var/lib/NetworkManager and there the file “/var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state”.
It had the following content:

[main]
**NetworkingEnabled=false**
WirelessEnabled=true
WWANEnabled=true
WimaxEnabled=true

I altered the “false” to “true” and now it works.

Is the work thus done?

I think so. On my system with KDE, there is a checkbox on the main screen of the
NM applet that controls this setting. Do you not have such a box?

I have, but the checkbox seems to have no function, I don’t know why.

After all, thank you for your help!
