No wireless card

I just bought a brand new toshiba laptop and I have 2 problems. The first is that suse doesn’t recognize my wireless card and the second is that I don’t have sound through my headphones (help on this is already given in a different topic).

I have a toshiba L670-187 and I can give the following information (and yes the hardware switch is ok, the orange light is on which means the wifi adapter is enabled):

can it be a problem related to IRQ problems like in this thread?

Can you give the relevant output of lspci without the “-n”?

  1. Not “lspci” nor “lspci -n” or even “lspci -v” gives the best SNR for a first shot, but “lspci -nn” or “lspci -nnk”.

  2. Your wireless card:

Help with ‘Make’

Here’s a thread that goes through configuring it. I’m not sure if it was actually resolved or not but it looked like it.

Can you please explain me what you mean with the ‘make’ thread?

Which thread do you mean?

I contains the solution to your problem, read it, especially the end (#10 + #11).

Sorry, I must have missed pasting the url.
Realtek 8172 not recognized - fixed right or not?

I installed the package which is at the top of this page. Rebooted, but it is still not working. Perhaps you can point me a little bit into the good direction?

Has the output from any of those commands changed?
Does the command “dmesg |grep firmware” show any output?

dmesg | grep firmware does not show any output.

I’ve got the sound working at the moment, I’ll hope we will have the same success with the wifi adapter! If you require any more information to give a better advice please ask!

rtl8192se + rtl8192se-firmware + rtl8192se-kmp-$flavor matching your kernelflavor, kernel version and architecture (“uname -r” and “cat /etc/SuSE-release”).

uname -r

2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop

cat /etc/SuSE-release

openSUSE 11.2 (i586)
VERSION = 11.2

Is this enough?

You installed the file called rtl8192se-0017.0507.2010-2.1.i586.rpm?
Are you sure it actually installed? If you do “rpm -qa |grep rtl8192” does it show up?

Yes, now you can choose the correct rtl8192se-kmp package.

When I want to install rtl8192se-kmp-desktop I get the error failed dependencies: rtl8192se-firmware 0017.0507.2010 is needed by…

I find that strange because when i run rpm -qa |grep rtl8192 I get: rtl8192se-0017.0507.2010-2.1.586

Do an “rpm -qa |grep rtl8192se-firmware” and see exactly which version you have. It may be slightly different.

I don’t find that strange at all, maybe you agree after reading the output again.

Alternatively, you could read my advise on WHAT to install again.

I see what you mean  The problem was the firmware packages were at the second page and that’s why I didn’t install them immediately (and it’s 1am right now, I need to get to bed…;-))

Installing firmware package now and then the kmp

I installed the following packages right now:

rtl8192se-kmp-desktop-0017.0507.2010_2.6.31.14_0.1-2.1.i586
rtl8192se-0017.0507.2010-2.1.i586
rtl8192se-firmware-0017.0507.2010-2.1.noarch

rebooted, but I still can not set-up a wireless connection. What’s the next step?

instead of rtl8192se-kmp-desktop-0017.0507.2010_2.6.31.14_0.1-2.1.i586 I installed rtl8192se-kmp-desktop-0017.0507.2010_2.6.31.5_0.1-2.1.i586.rpm. I have a wireless interface right now \o/
