no vlc in software list?

typing VLC into the search bar, and no results, alot of things that should be showing up aren’t.

Add the packman repositories.

I tried that but packagekit is still causing trouble

zypper ar -f http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_12.1/ packman
PackageKit is blocking zypper. This happens if you have an updater applet or other software management application using PackageKit running.

and the only software I have open is firefox and terminal.

You need to quit it. If you can’t figure it out. Just reboot and start
with the guide without any delay (before packagekit kicks in)

Are you using gnome or kde

Or kill it.

Or, rename the frontends, then reboot.
