hello,
I had installed the “kdemultimedia4 - kdemultimedia base package” to enable the thumbnails for video. But now, the thumbnails does not appear for both pic and video files. i checked the settings in Dolphin, previews have been enabled and i have entered the max file size as ‘9004 MB’. I checked the repo and the above mentioned package seems to have disappeared. I can find only “kdemultimedia4-thumbnailers”. will this package reappear in the repo? or is there any other way to enable thumbnails?
in dolphin > settings > general > previews
Do you have check box ticked there for thumbs?
For me it works, I have kdegraphics-thumbnailers and kffmpegthumbnailer
installed.

Only difference is I have not 9999 set but less. Your setting looks ok.
No idea why it works here (I checked on 12.1) but not for you. Did you
check that your codecs and ffmpeg are from packman?

yup. see my 'configure dolphin window:
I only have either or of those checked, not both.

Ooops, how could I miss that both are checked in that image, in 12.1 I
have not even the Mplayer thumbnailer installed, I focused too much on
the checkbox for the ffmpeg thumbnailer.

ok, it worked! i uninstalled the mplayer thumb and installed kffmpegthumbnailer (only kdegraphics-thumbnailers was installed) and logged out and back in. thanks a lot caf4926 & martin_helm
sorry, but one more doubt. the thumbnails i have at present is different. in the one i used to have, preview used to change on mouse hover (like a slideshow), but not in this one. which package should i install for that? that was way much more cool.
i am posting a screenshot of the related packages currently installed in my system:
SUSE Paste
I’m seeing that same issue
Also if you have the Information panel in dolphin, when you have a video in focus you should get a mini mplayer control to play the video in the panel, but it’s not there.
My videos don’t cycle thru frames on hover either.
do you know what happened to the “kdemultimedia4 - kdemultimedia base package”? i really miss that cycle through frame feature and there was much more elegance in thumbnail presentation when compared to “kffmpegthumbnailer”
No.
I will look in to this though
thank you. waiting for your reply…
I’m working through the mailing list so don’t hold your breath
Subbing in
I might see the problem
Go to software Management and try switching on Packman. One of the dependency issues is the thumbs package, amongst others.
The packman packages are built to the 12.1 kde release 4.7.2 not 4.8 - Hence the issue think.
@ caf4926,
did you try the above? has there been any other improvement?
Thanks for reminding me. There is still an issue with this. At least I don’t see it working properly. Thought the ‘Play’ in the ‘Information’ panel is back. But not the frame cycling on hover.
However, the biggest issue I see is. If I open dolphin on a dir with lots of videos (and hence thumbnails) the HD goes in to spaz mode and takes about 10 seconds to calm down as all the thumbnails refresh.
Theoretically, all the thumbnails (except new ones to the mix) should be cached. And I do see them in the hidden .thumbnails
A complication to this is, that the severity is usually greatest at first boot and first use of dolphin or if the machine has been left for some hours running but unused. \Open dolphin in either of these cases and it has it’s little moment.
thanks for the reply. i will wait till the issue is solved.
