No video only sound in Kafeeine, VLC and Mplayer

Hi!

Now that my wireless works O.K. I decided to install codecs for multimedia.

I followed the procedure found on Comunity/Multimedia-Restricted formats (codecs-kde.ymp) but video isn’t working just avdio, when I play video (.avi).

Must I install additional codecs and how?

I personally do not like the one click install. All it does is encourage users to blindly click and not have a clue as to what they are installing and what they are doing. Many say its the way of the future … IMHO if thats the future then we are in for doom and gloom. :\ … ok … < rant off > … … now that I have that off my chest.

I recommend the very first thing you do, now that you have your wireless working, is set up your software repositories. … Do that in accordance with the very simple guidance given here:
Repositories - openSUSE-Community
I recommend you install only OSS, NON-OSS, Update, Packman and ONLY those 4. No others. None. The problem with adding others is often the rpms of other repositories are not compatible with the rpms of yet even other repositories (and those 4). So save adding other repositories (repos) for when you know more, and/or for urgent one of application installations, when you add a repos for a given app, install the app, and then disable the additional repos.

Once your repositories are setup, you can easily ensure you have the correct versions of kaffeine, vlc, and MPlayer. To check that now, please copy and paste the following into a gnome-terminal / konsole and paste the output here:

rpm -q kaffeine vlc libffmpeg0 smplayer MPlayer xvid libquicktime0 w32codec-all

Based on what we read there, maybe we can give you a “clean-up” or “installation” recommendation

Also note, if you have “special desktop effects” enabled, that can cause problems. In that case either disable the effects, or go to your video player’s video output module selection and change “auto” or “xv” (xvideo) to “x11” and try again.

Good luck.

Hi oldcpu,

This is the result of my copy/paste:

kaffeine-0.8.6-54.1
vlc-0.8.6h-4.1
libffmpeg0-0.4.9.13782-1.1
paket smplayer ni nameščen
MPlayer-1.0rc2-4.pm.8
paket xvid ni nameščen
paket libquicktime0 ni nameščen
w32codec-all-20071007-0.pm.1

ni nameščen = not installed (localized version openSUSE 11).

About your rant… Well you are right, quick installs are deceptive easy especially for new users to Linux (like me…) and while they might quickly solve the problem they still leave you in the dark.

It appears a majority of your applications are from the videolan repository. You can tell the ones from packman repository, as they have the “pm” in the version numbering. My recommendation is you remove videolan from your software repository list and you change vlc and libffmpeg0 to Packman packaged versions. I also really like smplayer and libxine1/xine-ui (packaged by packman) and I recommend you install and use those.

I also recommend you follow my recommendation here:

Also, if you are using “special desktop effects” ( ie 3D / “the cube” ) then either:
a. switch off the “special desktop effects” and/or
b. in your video players switch the video output module from “auto” or “xv” (xvideo) to “x11”.

If you do not have success in doing the above, just post, and myself or someone else can walk you through how to do that. Its very simple (once you know how).

Good luck.

Hi!

Problems are solved! <:)

Video playback is O.K.

I did remove Videolan repository already yesterday but had to enable it today to remove VLC and other stuff from this repository.
Then I followed your instructions and viola…

Thank you for your help.

My problem isn’t that the XviD codec works or not. My problem is that i must have a conflict with drivers, because i open a simple AVI file with XviD codec in VLC and i obtain the classic blue screen (i have only the audio), and after that i open the same file with Kaffeine (VLC remains opened) and the file shows video and audio!!

Please, could you give a good solution?

Thanks a lot!

PD: Intel Driver i810, any problem with XviD?

Check your video output module for VLC. Change it from “xv” (xvideo) or “auto” to “X11” output and then see if it works.

Intel graphic drivers with openSUSE are notorious for causing this problem. Which openSUSE version are you using?

confirm it… using xv driver makes video appear as a blue screen… changing to x11 solves it… using intel 945gm
