no video in Kaffeine

Hello

Yesterday I updated Amarok. After that, when I tried to play movie files (in
avi format) only audio was playing but there was no video. Help please.

Is it just kaffeine?
What about VLC and Mplayer?

I have updated also some stuff. I think somethings of xine en some codecs. Kaffeine is now unable to play any video. I have this problem on suse 11 and suse 10.3.

Mplayer did play the video correct.

I had an issue with in 10.3 too
I just used Mplayer or VLC in the end
I think it was the result of some Packman updates - not sure what though.

Hmmm. Its an update from Packman in my case as well. I like Kaffeine more
than vlc or mplayer. but if there is no way out then i may have to try
them.

let me try vlc.

I have the impression you are mixing Packman packaged rpms with Videolan packaged rpms. Thats not a good idea.

I recommend you remove Videolan from your repositories and stick with only NON-OSS, OSS, Update, and Packman repos. Replace all rpms that you obtained from videolan with packman packaged versions (except for libdvdcss2).

In particular ensure you have packman packaged libffmpeg0 and xvid and vlc and not the videolan equivalents.

Yes, this is working! Thank you. For all the other readers, this is what I did.

Excuse me for my bad English, because I have to translate the options back into English.
Start yast and choose Filter: Repositories and Second Filter: Installation / keep packages checked (I think).
Choose “Videolan repository” and the Tab with versions. Now you can see from which repository the package is installed. I choose libffmpeg0 and changed it to the packman repository. After that my video came back.

The only thing I have from the Videolan repository is indeed libdvdcss. I remember to have choosen this for my dvd menus. I think I should remove the Videolan repository from the list to keep myself from updating to Videolan packages.

That could be the problem. I was under the misconception that the packages
from the two repos would match.

THANK YOU!!!

I’ve been using kaffiene for ages to watch flv files so suggestions to start using alternate players are bogus!

and thanks for teaching me about those alternate filtering methods in YAST! I’d never noticed those!!

I had the same problem - a conflict between packman and the other repo. made sure that only libdvdcss came from elsewhere and that the other items came from packman.

thanks to all!

Excellent post, thank you. I didn’t know about this filtering either. I’ve
been through and replaced all Videolan packages with Packman where
possible. However, I have a number of libraries e.g libmad where the
versions tab doesn’t offer me any other repositories. Do I keep these
libraries or try to delete them?

Sorry for the delay. You were right about the problem. I tried replacing the
packages and after a reboot video playback is normal again.
Thank you.

this did help to me as well. From now on, I’m going to disable VideoLan Repo… Thank you VERY much, Max

YES! AN ANSWER!

I’ve had this issue too, just was waiting it out hoping an update would fix it. Have three machines like this, couldn’t put my finger on it. Packman and vlc have always played nice together and I have not had problems with packages from either. I knew about the filtering thing or ‘searching via repo’ or fixing this issue. Cool if you just wanta browse the games repo.

So, anyone know if the vlc crew plan on fixing it? Is it just an incompatibility thing (use one but not both)?
