Not sure if it is supposed to be like this but I can use my keyboard shortcut to mute, but not to unmute. When I check in the Hardware/Keyboard/Shortcuts/Sound and Media in System Settings I see no listing to unmute. I do see that there is an option to add shortcuts. Does anyone know what the command would be to unmute on Gnome Shell so I could add it. Is it possible to add two commands to one key in Gnome Shell?
Just checked Fedora and PureOS. Both Gnome Shell distro’s. They both mute and unmute with alt/F2 on my keyboard.
Why is this broken on OpenSUSE 12.2 and how can it be fixed?
It appears that there are a lot of things broken in OpenSUSE 12.2 Gnome. Was four milestones, two beta’s and two rc’s not enough to catch this? The main menu editor app was/is broken too. Simple functions and core apps broken on release does not speak to being a very finished product to me. Or is developent on the Gnome side of OpenSUSE just not important? I guess I know what distro to avoid now for a competent Gnome Shell build.

WOW!! did the unmute work ok for you in all eight of those test versions??
and then suddenly when final release it stopped working???
that is very strange indeed.

Oh I am sorry, I didn’t know it was my responsibility to test every milestone and beta. I thought when a final was released that meant STABLE. Stock apps broken along with hardware keyboard shortcuts does not speak to stable, does it? But thanks for the smart ass response.
Now, is there anyone who is knowledgeable about this that can actually respond in a helpful manner?
Found a solution to no unmute in OpenSUSE 12.2 Gnome edition.
Go to System Settings/Keyboared/Shortcuts. Click on the plus sign and add this phrase to the command.
*amixer set Master toggle
*Put whatever you want in the name field. I just put Mute/Unmute
Now that the keyboard shortcut is made you need to set it to your keys. Mine is Fn F2. So I go to my new custom shortcut in custom shortcuts and click on where it says disabled. Then I press the key combination for that shortcut (Fn F2). It will have a dialogue pop up asking if you want to use this new shortcut as one already exists. Say yes.
That’s it. Now your mute/unmute works.
