I eventually got round to moving my AMDX4 machien from 11.1 to 11.2. I have done this to a coupl eof other similar machines so was not expecting any problems.
However I now have a problem. In runlevel 5 I have an xdm logon screen, but neither the keyboard or mouse work. I can ssh in from another machine and changing to runlevel 3 i have a keybopard and can log in. But sax2 does not respond to keyboard or mouse, so the machine is not really usable.
What package should I reinstall? Or what else can I do?

PS Not attempting to run gnome, kde or dfce; plain fvwm and X
Problem: sesam_srv-3.0.1-171.1.1.i586 requires libsm.so, but this requirement cannot be provided
deleted providers: sesam_srv-3.0.1-169.5.x86_64
Solution 1: keep sesam_srv-3.0.1-169.5.x86_64
Solution 2: break sesam_srv by ignoring some of its dependencies
No idea what this does
I have managed to get a keyboard/mouse, but attempoting toi login just goes back to the login page
Only error message I can find is
(EE) Failed to load module “freetype” (module does not exist, 0)
Trying safe mode was a disaster – it seems as if the grub installation has 11.1 on hd(0,3) and 11.2 on hd(1,3), and so grub complained that the oartition does not exist
Editing the grub menu.lst to 0,3 in all cases improved things a little – it says it is booting 11.2 but the state is the same as it was. Just worked out how to boot from a DVD and so am trying th eautomatic recovery. We will see.
basically the upgrade in place as I have done on other machines just failed.
I would re-install, start with fresh partitions.
Get it tidied up - If you were going to debian you would have to re-install fresh anyway. So give SUSE a go first. Upgrades don’t go well all the time.
This is the first upgrade I have done on about 10 machines with no trouble.
My friend is always suggesting I change to Debian – the on eDebian machine i have updates seamlessly for years, often without a reboot even.
I was somewhat disappointed with this experience. No time to fiddle with it until nect weekend
OK; I have reinstalled 11.2 and the effect is that OI still cannot use the terminal. When I log in and give password the screen goes blank and then I get a repeated login screen, This is exctly where I was before reinstalling.
I can ssh in from another machine and the logs ae all as one might expect. No error, nothing in /var/log/messages that is enlightening

Where do I look next? This machine was running 11.1 without any problems.

Never heaard of Dolphin. Not on any of my machines
> Have you tried Yakuake?
Likewise never heard of it and do not have it. Googlingf suggest this is related to kde which i do not run and do noit want top run. As i said at teh start i run straight X, no gnome or kde woith fvwm as window manager
the problem is definitely in xdm. If I go toi runlevel 3, log in to terminal and run startx I have a working system. Only difference is xdm
…and just to add to the fiasco, sound-juicer says it cannot fins a CD (there are two) and audacity cannot draw a complete window.
So far I have reinstalled twice, updated and hacked, but still no working system.
I now have another 11.2 machine that is playing up since being rebooted after Christmas. And other here are having problems with failing to log in. I need convincing that there is not a real problem somewhere in 11.2
I realise that I am answering my own posts but no one else sees to have any ideas
Today, after updating all changed packages…
xdm starts but when I log on screen goes blank, flashes message about using DVI and then sits blank. I ran strace on xdm when generate dlots of oitput, mainly writing tp /var/log/Xorg.0.log

No error messages. Still have no idea what is causing this, but at present the machine is unusable
Hardware: PhenonII X4, on Radeon grapohics, Asus motherboard. Ran perfectly until upgrade from 11.1 to 11.2; not been right since. have reinstalled 11.2 twice now.
if you want to change to Debian go ahead, but personally i don’t
appreciate your “threat” to switch…
use what is best for you…i do, and suggest all do…
your statement “Trying safe mode was a disaster – it seems as if the
grub installation has 11.1 on hd(0,3) and 11.2 on hd(1,3), and so grub
complained that the oartition does not exist” leads me to think your
install didn’t go as it should…no telling what is hanging on from
past ghosts or jumbled files…
you might want to eventually consider protecting home and data and do
a format install…
or, you might consider memtest your RAM…
or look to other strange hardware issues–like maybe are all your
machines ATI?
