no switch off after shutdown

dear all
I have leap 15.3 on HP laptop. My problem is the following
when I shutdown the computer, after the message power off the laptop does not switch off and I have to force it pressing the power button

can someone help me

thanks

Gianni

When the shutdown splash screen appears, press the Escape key to view the system messages which log the shutdown / power off actions.

 • From the messages displayed on the screen, there’ll be an indication as to why the shutdown / power off is hanging.

It may well be that, your system has some missing and/or not relevant components.

 1. Check for orphaned packages.
 2. Check with “zypper verify” that, all package dependencies have been satisfied.
 3. Check with “rpm --verify --all” that, all the files of all the installed packages are present and correct – some system files may be missing despite the fact that, the package(s) are installed …

I had similar behaviour on my Lenovo X1 Carbon gen-9 laptop.

I posted about this in this thread: https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/560646-openSUSE-Shutdown-halts-but-doesn-t-fully-shutdown-(ie-no-power-off)

I believe it to be an issue with the LEAP-15.3 nominal kernel, although I concede I could be wrong.

As noted in that post, I updated to a 5.14.11 kernel from the kernel:stable:backports repository (which seemed to ‘mostly’ sort the issue) and later to a 5.15.10-lp153.2.g85804f3-default kernel .

The issue is gone, although 1 out of 10 shutdowns is MUCH slower taking 90 seconds or so to shutdown instead of the nominal 10 seconds or so to shut down (where 9 times out of 10 I obtain a very quick shutdown).

I am currently traveling (for next 2 months) and so I am less inclined to keep up with latest kernel:stable:backports repository kernel, but after I return home in a couple of months I will likely update.

thanks for your reply
actually I did, the last message is “power off” but the laptop did not swhitch off and I have to force pressing the button

The 90 sec would perhaps point to “something” not terminating and it times out. If you do decide to investigate then for diagnosing shutdown problems this may prove helpful: Debugging

With upgrade to Leap 15.4 you’ll get 5.14 kernel. Then your problem might be solved.
