No such thing as free software

I didn’t know there was no such thing as free software. If a teacher
said it, it MUST be so…

Is he a member of the Kansas School Board, by any chance? <G>

Hey, GREAT idea–it might catch on like all the cracking and “file sharing”.
What was the name of that site that got rich by ‘hosting’ “sharing” of
copyrighted files/programs/music etc?

If it were illegal to download openSUSE the uptake might tremendously increase!!

WOW, make it better–build in a shareware style enabling code that has to be
cracked!!!

Believe me, if we follow this course we might cause M$ to crumble YEARS sooner!

I guess someone needs a new profession, they reminds me of the kind of teacher that has to consult the text book for the answers to questions they are asking

As for taking the disk’s off him he was handing out, I am sure if it was america he will sue rotfl!

i really feel for the guy. i can just imagine hime gritting his teeth and pulling out his hair while writting the post.

very very amusing.

Is it for real or fiction?

The school district that surrounds Atlanta, like a donut, switched to linux. Ask them if it was legal, moral, ethical or effective. The biggest problem they had is with the teachers who were incapable of making the switch. Several cases exist where inept teachers forced schools to go back to MS, even though the students adapted more or less instantly.

I have been pushing linux in schools in my area for one reason:cost. My district spends about $100k to license Office. A neighboring district got their MS system hacked by a 15 year old -twice. They should, but won’t, turn to linux. We could “push down” older equipment to lower grades rather than tossing it, if we ran linux instead of Vista.

Education budgets are tight everywhere. This should be an opportunity for openSuSE.

I believe the guy. I have been following Helios’ blog for a while. His posts are usually linked on LinuxToday, LinuxInsider and other known magazines.

It is a shame. I feel that this person is highly unlikely to ‘eat the humble pie’, when research reveals that his assumptions and misguided attitudes are infact, incorrect.

I am ashamed to say that that up until recently, it was my personal (uneducated) opinion that by abandoning Microsoft, I would be accepting to work amidst a 2nd rate platform. I believed that I would be sacrificing solidity and functionality from my computing experience. I am now more than happy to say that ‘I was wrong’. I eagerly anticipate the day that I feel my abilities are worthy of more than just being a user of Linux, and rather productively contributing to it.

It won’t take long. Once you start learning, you will find yourself here answering questions asked by other newbies. Someone will have a problem and you will say to yourself, “Hey. I fixed that last week, and I can give him/her the answer.” All of a sudden, you are supporting the community. It’s how we all started.

Thank you for your encouraging words, I really appreciate it

Don’t stop there - get the rest of the story.

----- partial quote-----
The student did get his Linux disks back after the class. The lad was
being disruptive, but that wasn’t mentioned. Neither was the obvious
fact that when she saw a gaggle of giggling 8th grade boys gathered
around a laptop, the last thing she expected to see on that screen was
a spinning cube.

She didn’t know what was on those disks he was handing out. It could
have been porn, viral .exe’s…any number of things for all she knew.
When she heard that an adult had given him some of the disks to hand
out, her spidey-senses started tingling. Coupled with the fact that
she truly was ignorant of honest-to-goodness Free Software, and you
have some fairly impressive conclusion-jumping.
-----read it all----

My kids use Linux on their computers. Although I suppose it’s ironic from a software freedom standpoint, a big reason is because I can secure it well for their web browsing safety. When they are ready, they’ll figure out how to circumvent it. lol!

They get plenty of M$ at school, so the variety is good for them. (and good for me, because I can get a lot more use out of those old 500 MHz PIII machines!)

Cheers,

Rod

My kids are all using Suse on their Dell. It’s actually dual boot setup with XP Home but they only boot into XP if there is some software they need to use that won’t run on Linux (e.g. their Scratch homework). At school they use OS X so they have basic fluency in three OSes.

For the 1st time in my short lifetime I’m seeing (even havn’t heard b4) something like this. I see people advocating for free software, people always find Linux advanced (but most of them fear to use it, atleast here). :open_mouth: , Donno what to say … probably that teacher hav some close relative in MS.

Thanks for the update, but the update just still brings concerns to me that ring out more that this is just a publicity attempt.

Why would a major UK magazine be interested in this story, unless it is a computer magazine, I doubt there would be much interest in this story, especially when they are all trying to dish the dirt of Gordon Ramsey. I guess the publisher is taking an early holiday in NZ, or could that be a common mistake I find amongst some Americans who for some reason think New Zealand is part of Europe.

I don’t know, there are just a number of parts to the story that just seem to scream false and publicity hunting. And yet, no one, not any other media outlets are running an original story on this, anyone running it is just running a carbon copy of the blog.
