No subtitles in VLC, no Video in Totem

Hi all. I’m trying to see a few movies compressed with Xvid in an .avi file, with subtitles in an external .srt file.

The issues:
With Totem I get an error telling me the codec it’s not installed. Tried everything to install it from repositories, but no luck.

With VLC the video and sound work fine, but I’m unable to load the subtitles, despite what I tell VLC to do.

With Xine I get the same error as in Totem.

I really don’t care about which program I use, as far as I get what a want: video, sound and subtitles.

As far I’ve tried several things like changing the video output from xv to X11, or OpenGL, changing the font to render the subs, and things I just don’t remember.

My only hope now is in this post, but I don’t know how to do this:

Fixed!
After playing around with the settings in xine, I noticed an option in the Video tab: OpenGL Renderer. It was set to 2D_Tex_Fragprog. I changed it to 2D_Tex and now everything is fine.

Any help is appreciated.

Reference your problem with xine, you could try working your way through this:
Check your multimedia problem in ten steps - openSUSE Forums

if you using xine, make sure your movie’s file name and your subtitles name’s file (srt file) are similar

Thanks both.
I’ll see if my config it’s as the forum post says.
The subs have exactly the same name as the movie.

Just for the record, Elisa Media Center do the trick and loads and displays subtitles correctly.
