No Splash after resolution change...??!?

After a successful install and update of SuSE 11 on my rig, I set about customizing it… wallpaper… done… sensors… done… etc. until… bootup resolution… ACK!

After I changed the default boot resolution from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050 (mf FP’s native res), no more splash screen on boot… not even a background as there normally is for the scrolling text. I checked /etc/bootsplash/themes, there is a config file and images for 1680x1050, so any idea why it’s not working?

Doing a grep for splash in /var/log/boot.msg returns the following suspicious statements:

<5>Kernel command line: root=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD5000AAKS-_WD-WCAPW2212610-part6 resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent vga=0x369
<6>bootsplash: silent mode.

(there are several more of these, with different apps named)
and finally:
Skipped services in runlevel 5: smbfs splash

So, any idea what’s up?

Well, found the problem… bootsplash only takes 16 bit modes - whereas vesafb only offers 8 and 24 bit modes for 1680x1050…
what to do now?
(I should point out that I was able to get a 1600x1200 splash screen on 10.3… is there a vesafb package I can update or so?

what is vesafb?
