No Sound

Hi,
Once in a while I stumble on this (after I install something which probably conflicts). I was able with the sticky notes to correct the problem few times but this time is a bit more complicated at least for me.
here are the info needed:

What is strange is that I cannot find the ALSA-Configuration.txt in my system.
Thank you for your time and help in advance.

Thanks. It appears your sound should be working. I note a 64-bit openSUSE-11.3 with the 2.6.34.7-0.5 desktop kernel with an ALC655 hardware audio code (that I known nothing about).

**Simple mixer control 'Duplicate Front',0**
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined penum
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback **[off]**

I note the above in your mixer, and I don’t recall seeing that control before. Does switching that from OFF to ON have any effect ?

I also note this control:

**Simple mixer control 'Channel Mode',0**
  Capabilities: enum
  Items: '2ch' '4ch' '6ch'
  Item0: '2ch'

Does changing that to 4ch and testing, and also changing it to 6ch and testing, provide sound ?

Reference testing for sound, what is your criteria for stating sound does not work? Try each of the following in a terminal, first as a regular user and then with root permissions:

  • first:
 speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
  • second, try again:
speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
  • third:
speaker-test -c2 -D hw:0,0 -t wav -l3
  • fourth, this next command has a volume meter at the bottom of its output with a changing number of #'s and %'s to show volume levels so run this command and tell me if the number of #'s and %'s are changing:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_*
  • fifth: and also:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav

Do any of those give an indication of sound ?

Also try those with and without headphones.

If none of the above works, and if we assume the PHYSICAL connections are correct on your PC for the speakers, then IMHO we are into bug reporting territory and also a possible update to alsa.

Speaking of which, please double check you have your speakers connected properly.

Hi oldcpu,
Thank you for your reply. Not sure what created this problem(well I did it) but as a result of what I did the sound doesn’t work. The system is simple and my speakers are the ones in the monitor and the video card needs to be connected to the sound card to output the sound(and it worked). It’s hard to figure out if it was an apps I installed(gtkpod, jripper, amarok) or something else. So I will try to answer to your questions in the same sequence:

  1. Mono: Playback [off] - kmix doesn’t give me the UI(hides in the background) and Amarok does the same to me. not sure what to do(even tough once I was able to see the UI for Amarok)
  2. Simple mixer control not able to modify this as I don’t have access to it(Kmix). In YAST->Sound I can change any values.and all are at 100%
  3. any of the test commands for sound will not provide any sound in the speakers
  4. aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_* has the level and the percentage moving(# and %)
  5. aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav has the level and the percentage moving but no sound(# and %)
Do you think is a bug? I wouldn’t like to open one until i’m sure that i didn’t forget something or tried everything.
    Thanks
    dan

??? that does not read right.

Did you try running ‘kmix’ from a terminal ?

Did you try running ‘alsamixer’ from a terminal ?

well. it’s not right but not sure how to fix it. I can remove it and reinstall it.
If I run kmix from a terminal is just not displaying anything. however alsamixer displays a basic UI on which I tried to make all kind of changes still without any luck. is there a log where all the output would go? didn’t find anything in the /var/log/messages
thanks

How about posting on a pastebin site the output of your dmesg ?

ie after a fresh reboot, as a regular user type in a terminal:

dmesg > dmesg-out.txt

and then open dmesg-out.txt with a text editor and copy and paste it to: SUSE Paste and create the page and post here the URL it provides.

Also, after a fresh reboot, if you restart your alsa sound driver with (root permissions) :

rcalsaound restart

does that help ?

I can point you to a web site to help you update alsa, but I’m not convinced an update will help.

Also, what version of KDE are you running?

URL: SUSE Paste

rcalsasound restart doesn’t help

I’m running KDE 4.4.4 release 3

I tried to run again kmix and get this error now as superuser:
dan@aruba:/home/dan:>/usr/bin/kmix
<unknown program name>(5863)/: KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: “Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.”

<unknown program name>(5862)/: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.

as user i get this:
dan@aruba:/home/dan:>kmix
Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)

i installed the debug package aslo but cannot find where it writes the log details.

I think you changed your configuration mid-thread, which makes it very confusing to me, as I do not know what you changed.

I note this in the diagnostic script. … No mention of a USB audio :

… where the script notes:

!!Soundcards recognised by ALSA
!!-----------------------------

 0 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237
                      VIA 8237 with ALC655 at 0xa400, irq 22

!!PCI Soundcards installed in the system
!!--------------------------------------

00:08.0 Communication controller: NetMos Technology PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller (rev 01)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)

And then I note this in the dmesg you just posted:

**# 8.061197] ALSA usbaudio.c:1274: 2:3:1: cannot get freq at ep 0x84
# 8.071225] usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio**

#    8.242113] VIA 82xx Audio 0000:00:11.5: PCI INT C -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
# 8.242395] VIA 82xx Audio 0000:00:11.5: setting latency timer to 64

Can you explain the USB audio reference ? Why is it not in the diagnostic script ? What else has been changed?

If you do not know how to use the debug (and I do not) then I recommend you do NOT install it. Remove it. It is just bloat unless you know how to take advantage of it. At best it will just confuse things (IMHO).

I’m puzzling why you are getting these errors , as they are not nominal. Did you have any problems during the installation of 11.3 ?

Please, can you post the output of the following command, which will tell me what repositories you have setup:

zypper lr -d

and finally, you could try to force the re-install of the following:

alsa-firmware-1.0.23-1.2.noarch
alsa-oss-32bit-1.0.17-29.2.x86_64
alsa-utils-1.0.23-1.8.x86_64
alsa-1.0.23-2.12.x86_64
alsa-plugins-1.0.23-1.9.x86_64
alsa-oss-1.0.17-29.2.x86_64
alsa-plugins-32bit-1.0.23-1.9.x86_64

the idea is in case one or more of them was corrupted during the initial install. After forcing the re-install of those apps, reboot and test sound.

Hi oldcpu,
I restarted as you suggested but after restart I realized that i did it directly from a vpn connection(to work). The only thing before doing the dmesg was to reset the ip address which is messed up in these situations in the /etc/resolv.conf file. I will do dmesg again so it can be clean. I will post shortly. The repositories I try to keep them clean and to a minimum. After the installation of 11.3, the only thing was that almost every time I logged in I needed to go to Yast->Sound and delete the card and reinstall it. A message in regard to the card would show up every time and I think last time I said something about removing them, but not sure exactly now about the exact message.
the snd-usb-audio might be the pc-camera, most probably and I can remove it for now.
dan@aruba:/home/dan:>zypper lr -d

Your repository list looks fine to me. Perhaps you could disable debug, but it should not be causing a problem.

After doing this did you have sound ?

That would make sense that it is a USB webcam. Removing it for your testing is likely a good idea.

Did you try forcing the re-install of the alsa (and libasound2) apps ? Note a restart of the forced re-install of those apps is needed.

If worst comes to worst, you could try updating per the guidance here: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE Be very careful when doing the update to ensure you install the correct alsa-driver-kmp version, and also that you successfully update libasound2 and all the alsa versions. A restart after updating is needed.

All I can see there wrt audio/sound is this:

    8.086104] VIA 82xx Audio 0000:00:11.5: PCI INT C -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 22
8.086286] VIA 82xx Audio 0000:00:11.5: setting latency timer to 64

and unfortunately that does not give me any hints.

should i reinstall 11.3?

No .

Did you read my post above ? Post #13 ?

Did you force the re-install of all the alsa* applications and libasound2 ?

Did you try update of alsa ?
