no sound

Hi. I’m new to linux, but have been doing ok at getting opensuse up and running so far.

I have just managed to install java, so I can now play applets within firefox, but I don’t get any sound.

I have the same problem with vlc media player (which I installed so that I could play .wma files). The files appear to play, but no sound is produced. Totem and banshee will play mp3 files with sound.

Any idea what the problem might be?

I don’t know about java, but when it comes to VLC its usually something to do with the settings!

Take a look at how mine is set and see if it helps to copy.

Oh and did you install VLC from the packman repo? It works really well from there. You’ll notice the difference if you haven’t just by looking at my screenshot!

Anyway, good luck!

Thanks! vlc now works brilliantly.

But still no sound for videos etc played within firefox. :frowning:

I typically play web videos with firefox, by having flash-player and MPlayer and mplayerplug-in installed.

Can you post the URL of the site that is giving you a problem with no video audio?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=(http://www.youtube.com)

Also, if I play a video here, then vlc also stops playing sound until the system is restarted.

I recommend you do not use vlc to play web based videos.

I can play youtube fine with firefox using flash-player and mplayerplug-in. (To use mplayerplug-in, I also had to install MPlayer, both from Packman packagers).
