NO SOUND!! why no sound? Please help!

Hello,

TL:DR: no sound, please help: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=fe38c3709d1009fcf6813794650160b48195561a

I’m back for my biennial “Linux try”. I must say, after doing a little customization, installing steam and spotify, deciding I might be able to live with libreOffice, everything looks really nice in SUSE13.1. Almost like a full-fledged desktop. Then, to my horrors, there was no sound when I went to test my glorious spotify-one-click install-ness.

I have Realteck ALC892 onboard sound that I would like to function, and HDMI sound on my video card that I couldn’t care less for. (see below for alsa-info.sh)

There is actually some sound, both front and back headphone jacks emit a constant high pitch noise. A sound card reset, like when saving Yast sound settings, will intermittently turn this noise off for half a second. (I’ve only ever fiddled with the “model” field, auto, asus-mode1-5 all don’t work)

I have installed alsamixer and pavucontrol. i have muted/unmuted to my heart’s despair. pavucontrol shows my device, shows it is on, volume is up, HDMI audio device is “off” analog out is set to “analog stereo” … likewise “SUSE sound set-up” shows same thing, HDMI device set to off, intel onboard sound set to “analog stereo” apparently I can change the volume (as in they aren’t muted) but pushing the test buttons doesn’t do anything.

Finally, in the console I tried “alsaconf” … it reports back there are no pci sound devices, there are no legacy drivers either. bummer.

But then why does alsamixer and all the device managers show my sound cards?

anyhoo, from there i tried the aplay -l and it does indeed show the devices, trying aplay -vv …/…/test.wav shows alsamixer playing something but no sound. it returns no errors.

Still at the terminal eyes and fingers bloody from all the troubleshooting, i ran alsa-info.sh … here are my results … looks like it finds everything ok.

I will rule out an unplugged cable because rear audio jack has same symptoms as my front one. Also, restarting computer or saving sound settings can make the constant high pitch noise disappear momentarily.

Is there any hope? Thanks for reading, look forward to your suggestions!

This is a long story above and I may have missed it while racing through it, but did you switch your multimedia packages to Packman as described in the first sticky thread of this Multimedia sub-forum?

Howdy Henk,

I put the alsa-info results in the first line in case folks could help debug just using the data and not the story. Thank you for your suggestion, I have packman in my list of repositories, and the 5 suggested repositories are all there.

I have looked at the “multimedia” pattern, in the list of installed things, only gstreamer-ugly and -bad come from packman.
Do I need to download anything else from them?

[extra info now:][TL|DR]

…Just accepted the language pack updates from them… don’t think that will change anything.

The constant high-pitch noise makes me think it’s a basic driver issue.

In device viewer, although there is an “input” and an “output” and a “control” type of south-bridge sound device, there are 2 or three of these that say they are of type “unkown” Not sure if this is normal.

I’ve tried one last trouble shooting step, and that was to run the command disable pulse audio. Immediately after, and checking there is no pulseaudio process, I tried the alsa aplay -vv test file and also nothing played. reported no errors.

I might buy a sound card over this but… what if that doesn’t start either?!?

OOOk totally unclear LOL

  1. is this NO sound or no multi- media sound???
  2. did you set the sound up in YAST?? Do you get sound from the test in YAST?

Ok short story I put a new MB in the machine also an new NVIDIA graphics card. Only have back panel plugs ie nothing on the video card but it still shows as a sound device.

In Yast the on board sound was listed first and I got no sound ( remember that this is plugs off the MB) Switched the order put NVIDIA first and bingo I got sound. This may or may work for you but it solved my problem. It appears that the hardware routes the sound to the plugs from the video card and bypass the on board chip. Never looked to see if there was a BIOS setting

Hello,

please pardon delayed reply. I have tried more trobleshooting. Using mint-kde live cd produces the same symptoms…

lol sorry for lack of clarity, I was trying to short-circuit your troubleshooting by writing what I’ve tried. There is no way to get the computer to play a sound. None. No aplay commands, no tests in YAST … nada… should this have gone in the “hardware” forum?

  1. did you set the sound up in YAST?? Do you get sound from the test in YAST?

as above, no sound. I have tried to disable the HDMI video card sound, in the “audio and video settings” I set the video card’s “profile” to “off”. In the YAST driver settings, I have switched the numbering (per your suggestion) and still no change

I said in my earlier posts that there is a constant high pitch tone that starts when the suse login screen arrives. it isn’t there during POST and if you update the driver settings in YAST, this note stops for a sec then resumes. Kinda like driver is getting reloaded but still wrong somehow.

This is what I asked you. Your answer is quite inadequate… Having the Packman repo in your repo list is not enough when you do not use it. Having only two packages from it is clearly not enough. You must “switch” to Packman and that action will replace a lot of multi-media packages from the openSUSE ones to the Packman ones. As long asyou did not do that, any further actions or advice is eather useless.

Did you read that sticky or not? I asked, but I got no answer.
