no sound when gaming

i have now decided to stick with opensuse 11 for good now after my trial periods of it and ubuntu, along with many problems with each.

now opensuse is working good, not lagging…yet, only problem is the sound does not work in any of the games- alien arena, sauerbraten, glest.

bump.

anyone?

Hey Dope,

Not sure how useful this bit of information is but I had a similar problem in Ubuntu 8.04, it was related to PulseAudio. I don’t know if the SuSe11 uses it but if it does try killing it before you start the game. That should fix the problem.

Cheers,
Fear

what sound card do you have?
i hear (no pun intended) that there is a fix for soundblaster, search the forum as this is where i found the fix

also, you don’t mention if you get ANY sound at all, eg during startup, MPEGS, MP3s and so on?

Hi all,
i got a strange problem with sound too.
Tried some games and had sound but now i’m trying to play Enemy Territory, but ther i have no sound.
Launched it from terminal and saw this :

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp

Does someone now what’s the problem ??

“------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp
------------------------------------”

This happened to me when i was trying to play quake3 with an onboard sound card. I proposed the following solution on this thread, which worked for me:

No sound in Quake 3 - openSUSE Forums

Hope this info helps.
