No sound - PC2001 Compliant AC '97 Audio

This is for a Gateway 3018gz with a “PC2001 Compliant AC '97 Audio” for its sound card. Problem, as mentioned in title is that there is no sound at all. Running Open Suse 11.2 on it. Anyone know of a driver for it? This is my sister in law’s laptop, and this is suppose to be “ready” in a matter of hours if someone can help as soon as possible, I would be greatful. Meanwhile I’ll continue my google search.

With such a tight deadline, the quickest way to get help is usually IRC chat feenode #suse or #alsa.

Anyway, if you look at your stickie: Welcome to multimedia sub-area - openSUSE Forums you will read:

If you have a problem getting your sound card to work, please go here:
SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

If that that does not help you get your basic sound working, please post … the following information:

  • provide the URLs (of a summary webpage) that are created by running the diagnostic script noted here:
SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE - Script to run to obtain detailed information. On openSUSE-11.1 and newer that will ask you to run the script /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh and after the script finishes it will give you a URL to pass to the support personnel. Please post here the output URL. Just the URL. You may need to run that script twice (the first time with root permissions to update in the /usr/sbin directory, and the second time to get the URL).
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -qa ‘alsa#and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -qa ‘pulse#and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -q libasound2 #and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: uname -a #and post output here
  • for openSUSE-11.2 or later, in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf #and post output here

… a key thing is your speaker test. Please try each of these speaker tests:

  • first:
 speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
  • second, try again:
speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
  • third:
speaker-test -c2 -D hw:0,0 -t wav -l3
  • fourth, this next command has a volume meter at the bottom of its output with a changing number of #'s and %'s to show volume levels so run this command and tell me if the number of #'s and %'s are changing:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_*
  • fifth: and also:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav

Do any of those give an indication of sound ?

Don’t forget to go to YaST > Hardware > Sound where you can edit your sound (use the default settings) and test your sound there also (but that test often does not work, even though your sound works).

Your best bet is to provide the information I quoted from the stickie.

I see you are posting all over the Ubuntu forum. …

IMHO you need to settle down with one approach and with one distro. Provide the information I requested from the stickie, and we can help.

If you have the program “xchat”, you can join “freenode” and channel #suse or #alsa for help.

No, none produced sound, yes the #'s and %'s changed.

Results are in text file. (too long for post)

I also followed the intial guide link, no luck from that either…though I don’t have a /usr/src/linux-2.6.* in fact I only have packages directory in /usr/src/.

??? thats the test I asked you to run to check IF there is sound. But that is NOT what I asked to post. ???

I asked this:

You posted none of that.

terribly sorry, here it is plus some other, if it helps any.

That helps (and it looks nominal). But its not enough for me to understand fully.

Please run this script in a terminal with laptop connected to internet:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

and select the SHARE/UPLOAD option. When the diagnostic script is complete, it will post the information to a web site and it will give you the URL/address. PLEASE post that URL/address here.

If for some reason it does not do that, then run the script again with the no-upload option:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload

which will put the information in the file /tmp/alsa-info.txt. Then open the file /tmp/alsa-info.txt with a text editor, copy it and paste it on the web site: New - Pastie, and press paste, and post here the URL/web site it gives you with the information.

I need that to see what (if anything) is misconfigured.

This suggests your mixer is set wrong. The script output will confirm if that is the case. Please provide the script output as requested in the above post.

Please also ensure PCM and Master and Speaker volumes (in your mixer) are all moved up HIGH to 95% or so.

If you think it a pulse audio problem, you could open up a Terminal session and enter su - and then the password.

At the terminal prompt enter this command (with root permissions).

setup-pulseaudio --disable

restart and test.

If that does not work, then you MUST enable it again with (with root permissions):

setup-pulseaudio --enable

I also hope you ran those tests I recommended not only as a regular user, but also in a terminal with root permissions.

here it is.

http://klinestudio.netai.net/misc/alsa-info-masternetra.txt

That link only gives a blank page. :frowning:

hmm…thats odd it had text initally hmm…I’ll try again

here ya go.

http://http://klinestudio.netai.net/misc/alsa-info.txt.5aJ5uW2j5o

That is a page full of advertisements.

Is this a joke?

Why can you NOT follow my advice ?

What is wrong with my advice ?

PLEASE post the output HERE: New - Pastie.

OK ???

I am! I dunno whats going on! It has text when I upload it, and even checked it, i dunno whats happening to it!

http://pastie.org/973749 hows that?

(Edited in the link to the pastie page with the code into the prior post, just in case your waiting for a “new post” with the link)

OK, thanks! Much better. I note a 32-bit openSUSE-11.2 with the 2.6.31.12-0.2-default kernel on a Gateway M320 and 4500 Series with an AD1981B hardware audio codec.

Looking at your mixer and I think sound should be working. You could move your volume controls up to 95% for now (you can back off to a lower level once sound functions).

Card hw:0 ‘I82801DBICH4’/'Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B at irq 17’
Mixer name : ‘Analog Devices AD1981B’
Simple mixer control ‘Master’,0
Front Left: Playback 23 74%] -12.00dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 23 74%] -12.00dB] [on]
Simple mixer control ‘Master Mono’,0
Mono: Playback 2 6%] -43.50dB] [on]
Simple mixer control ‘PCM’,0
Front Left: Playback 23 74%] [0.00dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 23 74%] [0.00dB] [on]
You could also try increasing your master mono volume control.

If you plug in headphones, do you get sound ? Did you try the pulse audio disable test like I recommended ?

If the above fails, you could try updating to 1.0.23 of alsa. There is guidance here for doing that: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE You MUST follow the instructions on that page if you wish to succeed in this.

I tried moving mono up to 74 in the volume in Yast>hardware>sound, with no effect. pulse is currently disabled, I tried enabling it again and wireless broke. Even restarted it again with pulse enabled with same effect so I disabled it. Both cases no sound, and don’t have any headphones to test with.

Headphones are not expensive.

Anyway, as noted, if the above fails, you could try updating to 1.0.23 of alsa. There is guidance here for doing that: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE You MUST follow the instructions on that page if you wish to succeed in this.

followed the instructions to the letter and updated it, restarted afterwards, still no sound, and no headphones but i have $0 of spending money at this time, I don’t get any money until the end of the month…and even at that not enough to waste on anything. Maybe July…
