what should I do?
Thanks for help

I note your PC is an HP ProBook 4515s running a 32-bit openSUSE-11.1 with the 2.6.27.7-9-pae kernel, and 1.0.18 of alsa. I note the hardware is new, with a IDT 92HD75B2X5 hardware audio codec.

Likely you need to:
(1) update alsa, and
(2) possibly specify a model in /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.

First to update alsa, please go here: Alsa-update - openSUSE
and that will tell you to add the 1st multimedia repository with command:

zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/libs/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia

then do NOT send the zypper command, but rather go to yast and install the last (likely 1.0.21 or 1.0.22) versions of alsa for applications alsa-utils, alsa-tools-devel, alsa, alsa-firmware, alsa-devel, alsa-tools-gui, alsa-oss, alsa-plugins-jack, alsa-plugins, alsa-plugins-maemo, alsa-tools, alsa-plugins-samplerate. Please check after to ensure you actually updated the application. Many users get a message application is already installed, when it has not been updated, and they fail to update the application. Do NOT fall in this trap.

Then remove the repository with

zypper rr multimedia

do NOT forget to do this. If you do, the next step will fail (plus other problems0.

Then add the repos for the updated driver and install the driver with the following 3 commands:

zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
zypper install alsa-driver-kmp-pae
zypper rr multimedia

then reboot and test your sound with a proper sound test.

Hi, oldcpu, thanks for your answer.
When I added new multimedia repository, I was surprised that there were no alsa versions >=1.0.18 in Yast!
I deleted that repo and added it again- but nothing changed.
Should I delete all repos besides multimedia or try to install all packets manually?

I deleted all repos besides recommended one and updated all avalibla alsa packets. Here is the code:

# rpm -qa | grep alsa

Unfortinately, the sound didn’t appear.((

 # speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav

You need to check carefully in YaST. The rpms are there after you add the repository, but clearly you did not see how to update them. Its not difficult, but you need to look carefully. I am not on a Linux PC right now so I can not walk you through exactly what mouse icon to click and what tab to select, … but if you have not figured it out in 5 hours or so, I’ll be back at a Linux PC then.

Please look again.

Clearly the update was not done. You also did NOT install the alsa-driver-kmp-pae like I recommended. Please try again!

oldcpu, I did all you’ve recommended, and test sound arrears!!!
thanks a lot!
have a nice day!

Well Done !! Congratulations on solving this !!
