When I record something with Webcamoid and Logitech C525 USB webcam I cannot hear any sound when I replay it with VLC.
When I use Cheese I can hear sound but I cannot adjust Cheese at all. There is no preference tab seen. Maybe https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cheese/+bug/1879183

I also tested Gucview but it work just like Webcamoid.

I noticed that there are differens when I list configuration with pacmd list-sources -command.

I’d check what input source the recording software is using. There’s usually only one video source - your cam - but maybe the audio input is set to your pc mic input, or other device. You could try kde audio settings or pavucontrol.

P.S.: In my desktop with webcam, kde audio shows that the recording device is the webcam mic, not muted and it’s volume is set to 100%.

Note: this is in a 15.2 LEAP install using pulseaudio AFAIK. It appears that TW use pipewire, not sure. If so IDK if pavucontrol works.

If I understand correctly your webcam is a Logitech HD Webcam C525, and you recorded with a Webcamoid app, and you also tried recording with Gucview.

In both cases you believe no audio is recorded based on a test trying to play back with vlc.

Further to brunomcl’s excellent suggestions, can you confirm:
(1) that play back with vlc (with audio) works on other videos using your setup?
(2) that there is no audio embedded in the file, as is likely proven if you also try playing back with another audio player other than vlc? If you have smplayer installed you could try with that application.

Nominally with pulse audio, one can control on a per application basis, which mic records audio, and which sound device will play back audio. I assume that has not changed, even with pipewire.

You could also show us the mediainfo from the recorded video file. ie install ‘mediainfo’ app and try:

medianfo your-web-cam-video.mp4

The intent of this recommendation is to narrow down exactly where is the problem? Is it because there is no audio recorded? or is it because the audio is not being played by vlc.

My view is brunomcl has given good guidance here.

  1. VLC works ok at least with avi, mkv and mp4 file types. And also webm file type if it is recorded with Cheese.
  2. I tried Amarok (I know it’s not video player but anyway…). Video recorded by Cheese has sound but Webcamoid doesn’t have sound.
I noticed that there is no “sound” in VLC display. URL: https://paste.opensuse.org/17224223
Logitech C525 should record sound. URL: https://paste.opensuse.org/12326874

Your system does play webm sound but there is no sound on file Video\ 2021-08-02\ 14-03-45.webm.

Issues occur with any system: https://www.google.com/search?q=Logitech+HD+Webcam+C525+linux+sound+missing+solved.

Note that nominally pulse audio can record sound in an application on a per device basis. ie … one can configure pulse to record audio from a USB webcam mic, or from a mic on a computer input … etc …

ie one needs to ensure pulse audio is configured to record sound from the correct audio input device. I don’t have Tumbleweed running at the moment to confirm (possibly tomorrow I can check this out on a Tumbleweed install), but if pavucontrol (pulse audio volume control) works under Tumbleweed, check with pavucontrol to ensure pulse is configured to have Webcamoid (or gucview) record the audio from the appropriate input mic device. I assume you are trying to record with the webcam mic? Its quite possible pulse is trying to record with a different input than the USB webcam mic for Webcamoid (and for gucview).

Cheese application can record sound to webm file but for examble Webcamoid and Guvcview not.

Is my C525 too old? It has worked reliably for years with Skype. I took one more compare list between my video (Video 2021-08-02 17-42-14.webm) and big_buck_bunny.webm. There are differences but I don’t understand what they mean. https://paste.opensuse.org/25336002

I’ve been reading those linked sites but I still don’t know what I should do.

That’s what I try to do ie record with webcam mic.

I don’t quite understand the linux sound system. For me it’s like a himmeli (a Finnish Christmas decoration)

Ever tried ‘Configure’ tab?

Yes. But I don’t know what I’m strictly speaking configurating. The HD Webcam C525 is obvious but Sisäinen Äänentoisto (Built-In Audio?) is not. There are lot of choices which are unavailable. I will try do a list of the choices but it takes time.

Is it possible that Webcamoid (or some one else) is trying to use wrong USB?!

You can see logs:

Aug 03 01:55:10 Tumbleweed kernel: usb 1-4: Failed to query (SET_CUR) UVC control 4 on unit 1: -32 (exp. 4).

Aug 03 01:55:11 Tumbleweed kernel: usb 1-4: Failed to query (SET_CUR) UVC control 8 on unit 1: -32 (exp. 1).

But if I understand right the usb 1-4 is not C525 camera but keyboard or mouse (I don’t remember which is which)
