I got a new HP desktop. Apart from w11 I’ve installed tumbleweed. Sound worked for a while on tw but stopped. Everything in KDE or cli tells me sound is going out, but it doesn’t (speakers and headphones alike) a USB headset works fine (has its own audio controller). Chipset is H670 and realtek alc3867-cg. W11 meanwhile operates normally. So there is no hardware issue it would seem.
Any help in resolving this issue is greatly appreciated.
I’ve had a similar experience - sound works, then does not.
I am also using TW with KDE Plasma with X11. How I solved the problem is showing the KDE Configure Audio Devices option. For me, there are SO MANY choices, that I tried each one until worked. So, here are some screenshots that will make more sense.
I left click the Volume icon on the KDE Toolbar. Then select the Configure Audio Devices option … see first screenshot.
.
Then, when the Configure Audio Devices window pops up, you will notice a drop-down selection field, labeled Profile (see screenshot #2). Click on that Profile drop down and you should see quite a few options to choose. This is where I tried the different options and suddenly I have sound !!

Thanks for the thorough post. Appreciate it… I for now have sound again all of a sudden. I dumped journal and dmesg for future reference. Also I’ll try the steps you pointed out.
hi @malcolmlewis , yup sof-firmware was present and even tried to force reinstall it with zypper but unfortunately to no avail. at this very moment it’s working again and I copied the boot dmesg and journal to file so I can compare later on.
@stacheldrahtje A shot in the dark,. Try to install qpwgraph
After that play audio, open qpwgraph and see if there is an audio working .
If there is, try connecting the nodes to the the output where you want the audio to come out.
Hi @conram, thanks for the suggestion. I used qpwgraph but it showed that everything was connected where it is supposed to be. Same with carla. The VU-meter in the sound system-tray shows activity, but no sound comes out of the speakers.
I had this exact same problem. When I hover mouse over KDE Audio icon on taskbar, I could see audio was playing on VU meter (I was playing an MP3 audio on the laptop), but no sound.
Basically, I did what @aggie showed and suddenly I hear sound.
It looked like they were connected that way, there was no change. and all of a sudden it started working again (no changes made). So will try again when it happens again
Hi, I’m reporting back. I’ve solved the issue by powering down w11 and then reboot to tumbleweed. now everything works as expected. probably something to do with bios.
I am extremely out of the loop when it comes to dualbooting, but could this be a “Fastboot” problem with windows? From what I recall, that it behaves properly, after a full powerdown would lead me to believe so.
@stacheldrahtje@sfalken it’s not only sound, but USB, network cards… it’s Windows thing and powering off devices, simple way is just to disable all the power stuff in Windows…
