No Sound in some bits of 11.2

Sound Problems

I’ve got sound when logging in and out
I’ve got the sound notifications when using kopete
I’ve got sound when using MPlayer media player

So that’s all good… however

I’ve not got sound when I use firefox (tested on youtube)
I’ve no sound using SMPlayer or VLC media player
I’ve no sound from the test sound in yast’s configuration ‘play test sound’
I’ve no sound from the tests (speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav) and the other one from the audio troubleshooter,

Bit stumped at where to go now, should I delete the sound card and let Yast sort it out again? I’d jump at that option if it weren’t for already having sound in other programs & bits of the OS

Any ideas?

AP

Do NOT delete the sound card. This does NOT read like a sound card problem.

Rather it reads like either a codec problem , or an application installation problem, or a player configuration problem.

Lets discuss smplayer and vlc. Please note I always recommend you set up your software repositories with ONLY OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. No others. None. And I then recommend packman packaged versions of applications be installed, replacing any Novell/SuSE-GmbH versions. In particular note do NOT enable videolan repository with Packman as the applications/codecs from videolan are known to cause problems with those from Packman. You can tell packman packaged versions of applications by the “pm” in the version number.

Now for codecs, I always install from Packman ffmpeg/libffmpeg (which pick up various codecs in their dependencies), w32codec-all, libquicktime0, and libxvidcore4 (plus various other codec packages - surf the packman site to learn more: PackMan :: home )

Note the 1 click install is IMHO something that should be used careful. I do not like it because I have very little insight into what it is doing. Always say NO to keeping a repository after installing an application with 1 click install. Or better yet, do NOT use 1 click install. Set up the 4 and only repos that I recommend, and then go to YaST > Software > Software Management and change the “filter” to search and searach for and install Packman packaged version of apps.

Now if you installed videolan apps, you have things messed up, and you need to spend some time undoing what has been done. There is guidance here from RedDwarf: Check your multimedia problem in ten steps - openSUSE Forums

Now reference your flash player, this may or may not be tricky to solve. Ensure your PCM volume is turned up. Note that changes dynamically with multimedia applications, and if you launch a new multimedia application, it may go to 0. Also, test your flash with other multimedia applications CLOSED. There is always a risk one of them has seized the audio device and is not letting it go.

Also, if you are convinced you have everything set right, with flash-player installed and your mixer correct, but you also have libflashsupport installed, try removing libflashsupport, restart your pc and test.

Reference no sound from the speaker tests, PLEASE quadruple check your mixer. Ensure master volume, PCM volume and speaker volume are up to 95% !! when testing. Also, test as both a regular user and as root. And also test with headphones NOT plugged in and with headphones plugged in.

Thanks oldcpu,

Sorted.

I had thought it was really odd having no apparent problems with the sound, the first time ever with any suse variant. Then of course I read your distrowatch comment saying the sound problems were tiny compared to other releases and all of a sudden the sound failed in what appeared a bizarre fashion.

In the end I found in kmix’s configure channels two PCM’s were ticked, dunno how I got a channel called IEC958_Default PCM, but whatever the case as soon as that was not selected, and just the normal PCM ticked everything is super.

I have got videolan in my repositories, but not enabled. I followed the guide someplace on here concerning the restricted codecs and stuff and used it to get the libdvd thingy as it said. I disabled it straight after tho, just as the guide says.

This 11.2 version is really starting to grow on me after 2 years with 10.3, and with it running in a quad core box with 8gb ram, it seems to be as stable as 10.3 with kde3.5 ever was, and add to that the fact that it veritably flies along

thanks again

AP

Glad to read its working now. Thankyou for sharing your solution.

11.2 is starting to grow on me also.

I also had a similar problem with 11.2 and KDE.

Flashplayer was working but no sound playback in Amarok or VLC.

I followed the 10 suggestion by RedDwarf. After removing all extra VLC packages and re-installing the Packman repository my sound problems were solved.

Thx oldcpu for posting the suggestion!
