I’m running openSUSE 11.2 on KDE, although the problem persists on other desktops. I followed the instructions on SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE , as well. If anyone needs any other information, please let me know. It worked before, I don’t know what caused it to stop working.
As well, I’ve tried to install the restricted formats, but even when my audio did work, it wouldn’t play them. I followed the instructions specific to my version on the restricted formats guide.
As I said at the end of my post, I followed that to the letter already.

In addition to providing the information caf4296 requested (which IS important), it might also help if you let us know EXACTLY which media players you have tried? There are dozens of media players, and trying to guess which one, in order to provide support, is difficult.

The media players I’ve tried are Banshee, and XBMC. XBMC plays restricted formats just fine. I tried Amarok, and it worked as well. I don’t think it played restricted formats, though. MPlayer also works. Perhaps the problem is restricted to some shared libraries Banshee and XBMC have?
Become su - in a terminal and do this:
(use you mouse to copy and paste, so there are no typos!
zypper rr 8
just because I plan to replace it
zypper rr 2
it a non-updating packman repo
then
zypper rr 1
you don’t need this repo
Now do
zypper ar -f http://packman.unixheads.com/suse/11.2/ packman
then
zypper ref
accept any licence if requested
now finally do
zypper dup -r packman
Did that and it didn’t work. scratches head
Please post again
zypper lr -d
And now explain what works, what does not.
Output of zypper lr -d

Two things do not work: Sound from Banshee and XBMC, and playing restricted formats in any media player other than XBMC. Sound from Banshee and XBMC worked just fine before, so I don’t know what I did that changed it. Sound works from every other source, such as MPlayer, Chromium, Opera, and Amarok. I’ve tried it on GNOME, KDE, and LXDE, and the problem persists.
Check the sound settings in those apps and see if there is a setting for using Alsa sound. Try different configs.
Looks like that worked, thank you.
Banshee’s playing MP3s now, but none of the other restricted formats. The other media players I’ve tried (VLC, XBMC) can, however.

Good, so are you reasonably ok now?
