I have tried putting the PCM to full levels this has not worked. This is a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.3. I wanted to install a stable version of Linux on my friends system. All other sounds and codecs are working well, except flash in Firefox. This is not a good example. Is there a command line mixer I could check the sound levels on. Like ALSAMIXER for Gnome but for KDE. This is really frustrating.
Your KDE graphic mixer is kmix. You can add extra controls in kmix via a menu.
The command line mixer is ‘amixer’, and you can learn more about it by typing ‘man amixer’.
If using KDE, did you check kmenu > configure destkop > multimedia and see what backend is in use? Have you replaced the crippled Novell/SuSE-GmbH gstreamer/xine with the Packman packaged versions? Have you checked to see if the order of devices in Kmenu > configure desktop > multimedia match the order of devices in YaST > Hardware > Sound ? This is important when the PC has multiple sound devices.
No, I didn’t know there was crippled problem. I don’t use KDE so I’m a n00b with it. They wanted something vaguely Windows like. How do I replace the crippled ones with the packman versions?
Sorry for being dim, I just don’t get KDE.
I’m thinking of putting on Gnome, but really hate it when problems beat me. So any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Its not KDE that is crippled, it is openSUSE in general for multimedia. Take a look at this section of our forum :

… and in particular ensure you look at (and follow) Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide.
I followed that guide all media is installed all sounds and codecs work. Just flash it refuses play sound.
Now I done an install with Gnome on the same machine and there was sound on flash but not in KDE. Any ideas as to what’s going on?
When playing flash in a browser in KDE, be certain to check the PCM volume control, as it may have been dynamically set to zero.
Also, in KDE, ensure the settings for the order of sound devices under KMENU > Configure Desktop > Multimedia is the same as the order of sound devices under YaST > Hardware > Sound.
