No sound from HDMI

LEAP 42.2, new installation from scratch:

  • Intel Core i5-2500 CPU
  • Asus P8H61-M LE Mainboard
  • nVidia GF114 [GeForce GTX 560] graphics board
  • nvidia…G04 graphics drivers from nVidia.

I get no sound from HDMI (GF114 HDMI Audio Controller). With openSUSE 13.2 (Harlequin) I did get sound using the same hardware.

Sound is correct via the internal audio analog stereo.

What can I do?

There are a number of things to try … Note nominally by default, sound is routed to sound-card-0, which in your PC case is likely “the internal analog stereo”. Likely the HDMI is sound-card-1 (I am speculating here). So you need to tell openSUSE to route the sound to the HDMI instead of to “the internal analog stereo”.

Possibly the easiest way to do this is to install the application “pavucontrol” and after it is installed, go to the ‘configuration tab’ and select to use the HDMI device. Then after having done that, try to play sound with a multimedia application. Likely you may still not get sound, because pulse audio may still be configured for that application to send sound to the “internal analog stero”. So then in that case, using pavucontrol, go to the “playback” tab when the application is trying to play an audio/multimedia file, and select the HDMI device again.

If that does not seem to work for you, then please give us some more information. You can do that by sending the following command in a konsole/xterm, with PC connected to the internet, as a regular user:

/usr/sbin-alsa-info.sh

and select the SHARE/UPLOAD option, and let the script run to completion. After it has completed then look in the konsole/xterm and it will give you a webaddress/url to share where an assessment of the configuration of your PC’s audio has been uploaded to. Post that URL/webaddress here so we can examine the configuration in more detail.

Good luck.

Thank you so much. It works after pavucontrol had been started exactly as you described it. After a newstart all audio system configurations are up to date.

Have a nice weekend.
