No sound and no desktop effects

I have recently installed openSUSE 11.1. I have no sound with my Realtec ALC888 on board sound chip. Tried all of solutions posted to no effect. Also have an ati r4670 video board. Tried all posted solutions, still no access to things like desktop effects. After downloading the ati driver from the ati site and installing as directed, the whole os stopped working; repair did not work and I had to totally reinstall. Obviously cannot do any multimedia work on this computer and finding the os quite disappointing.

Tried all of the posted solutions? Thats very vague …

Try working your way through the openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

To determine if you have sound, please copy and paste the following speaker-test into a Gnome terminal or a kde konsole: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavYou should hear a female voice saying ‘FRONT LEFT’, ‘FRONT RIGHT’ five times.

If you have no success with the audio troubleshooting guide, then I will need more information if I am to make a recommendation … So can you provide more very detailed information so a good recommendation can be given? You can do that, with your PC connected to the internet, by opening a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole and typing:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.shthat will run a diagnostic script and post the output to a web site on the Internet. It will give you the URL of the web site. Please post that URL here. (Just the URL) It may be that you need to run that script with root permissions. Please note that I need that output to understand better your PC’s configuration.

Also, please copy and paste the following commands one line at a time into a gnome-terminal or a konsole and post here the output: rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/soundI also need that output. Hopefully with that I can make a good recommendation.

Thank you for the interesting reply. The sound test did work as expected.

Nevertheless, when I boot I get a quick message that phonon HDA ATISB does not work (Or something to that effect), the mixer and sound volume app does not work, the Amarok media player cannot play music cd’s giving the error: "could not start process: unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: unknown protocol: audio cd.
Perhaps what would be helpful on this issue? Then next on to the ATI driver issue.
Thanks again for a start toward a solution.

Sorry for the second reply post. But things are slightly better. Still get error at boot to the effect that phonon audio player driver for alc888 does not work. But sound test works, mixer app does actually work and I can hear the voice recording sample file in Amarok. Tried adding cdrom & disk groups to user profile and rebooted, but still same error message when trying to play audio cd. So sound almost there, in spite of error message.

No progress on desktop effects etc. with ATI R4670 MSI video board.

Thanks for the wonderful help thus far.

Great! then your sound works.

This is likely a bug in openSUSE-11.1 . I’ve seen this also. If you search on the exact error message on this forum, you should discover some work arounds to address the error message.

The opensuse audio troubleshooting guide URL I provided may help you there.
