no sound after update to 11.1

thanks for your patience. Here are the command results:

As to inconsistencies in mixer settings I admit that I am totally new to using audio at all. I used kmixer (the graphic interface) to define settings which seemed consistent to me. I’ll go over it, again, hopefully complying with your advice.

thanks again, Bernd

Well, as before, the obvious item is your libasound2 is the wrong version. Other than that, I don’t see anything obvious. You libasound2 should have been a git version similar to the others. But if you decide to update it now, you will need to update all the alsa apps as well, as the alsa apps were updated today (18-Feb).

Now, I am puzzled. I updated all alsa components that yast had marked as installed. All the ‘git’ versions disappeared and I get versions that typically contain 1.0.18 instead of 1.0.19 as before.
E.g.:

rpm -qa|grep alsa

alsa-tools-1.0.18-1.13
alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.18-6.12
alsa-driver-kmp-pae-1.0.19.20090216_2.6.27.7_9.1-3.1
alsa-plugins-1.0.18-6.12
alsa-firmware-1.0.17-1.42
alsa-oss-1.0.17-1.37
alsa-utils-1.0.18-6.4
alsa-1.0.18-8.7

rpm -qa|grep pulse:

libpulse0-0.9.12-9.6
pulseaudio-esound-compat-0.9.12-9.6
alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.18-6.12
libpulsecore4-0.9.12-9.6
vlc-aout-pulse-0.9.8a-9.1
libxine1-pulse-1.1.15-20.8
pulseaudio-0.9.12-9.6

rpm -q libasound2:

libasound2-1.0.18-8.7

I used the following repositories:

URL: Index of /update/11.1
URL: Index of /pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/11.1/
URL: Index of /distribution/11.1/repo/oss
URL: Index of /source/distribution/11.1/repo/oss

Now, I’m at a complete loss as to what to do.

Bernd

I think you need to stop, step back, take a breath of fresh air, and think a bit.

It appears you did not update those packages, you downgraded !! Watch carefully what you are doing, and if does not make sense, stop and ponder it.

Take a look at the URL for the git packages:
Index of /repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_11.1/i586

now there is no mystery to that link. Its in the commands I gave you previous. Look at the versions in there. Look at the versions that you downgraded to. Do you see now what is wrong?

I did stop, reinstalled the new versions from the url for the git packages and fumbled a bit with the mixer settings.
Voila, everything works again.

Here are the currently installed versions and mixer settings -in case you are interested:

alsa:

alsa-plugins-1.0.19.git20090218-1.3
alsa-driver-kmp-pae-1.0.19.20090220_2.6.27.7_9.1-1.1
alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.19.git20090218-1.3
alsa-tools-1.0.19.git20090120-1.11

alsa-utils-1.0.19.git20090219-1.1
alsa-oss-1.0.17.git20080715-2.20
alsa-firmware-1.0.19.git20090120-1.1

pulse:

libpulse0-0.9.12-9.6
pulseaudio-esound-compat-0.9.12-9.6
alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.19.git20090218-1.3
libpulsecore4-0.9.12-9.6
vlc-aout-pulse-0.9.8a-9.1
libxine1-pulse-1.1.15-20.8
pulseaudio-0.9.12-9.6

uname and modprobe gave the same results as before.

settings for kmixer:

output:

‘master’,‘headphones’,‘PCM’, and ‘front’ rather high (95%), the remainder to 0%.

switches:

IEC958 playback source to off
all switches to off.

I do not know, why I downgraded, though; to my understanding ‘aktualisieren’ means ‘change status to current’ and that’s what I had intended to do with Yast.

Still, I hope that we can now close this and I will have sound, forever.

Thanks again, Bernd

Congratulations, and WELL DONE in sorting this out. Thank you for sharing your final configuration.
