nicholasbuckner, when a program will not load, it means one of two things. Either you are missing something that is required or the program is no longer compatable with the version of openSUSE or KDE that you are using. For instance, GL117 seems to have a problem with the latest version of KDE and used to run OK with openSUSE 11.2 when it first came out. I don’t know what happened, but I get along without the application these days.
I don’t use vlc, but I do use kaffeine & mplayer under openSUSE 11.2 and KDE version 4.3.5. All that means is that you don’t really need more than one version of a video or MP3 player if you already have one that works. Finally, some programs were designed to work with GNOME and not KDE. Even though I use KDE all of the time, I have determined that installing the GNOME desktop can add additional compatibility for programs intended for a desktop other than KDE, like GNOME. One such example is using Banshee in KDE instead of Amarok, if you are so inclined.
Such issues of being unable to run an application can be a real frustration until you realize the number of options you already have that work. It is very much OK to try out different programs to find the best, but having a few apps that will not run under your present version of openSUSE 11.2 and KDE are not all that uncommon.

If an application does not run, and it is opensource, then report it in Bugzilla.

How did you install vlc - from packman repo via yast2/zypper, or manually? Try adding the packman repo and installing.
Also, if the other programs are 32 bit, you need to add 32 bit compatibility (it’s one of the package options in yast>software).
