No process more than 1% CPU - both CPUs between 20 and 40%

Hi again!

After this strange case here https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/505859-NetworkManager-GDbus-error-with-YaST-no-apper-firefox-thunderbird

I now have a Dell Precision M4300 with openSuse 13.2 64 (dual boot with windows 7 pro) that has been running with high fan speed for 2 days.

Interesting finding: Ksysguard shows only 3-6 processes with CPU usage (arroung 1-3% each), while the tab for CPU load shows both CPUs constantly at 20 to 40%. Ksysguard shows processes for root, user and all possible other users (ntp etc.).

My question: is there an alternative to Ksysguard to show me the processes acually eating up the CPU and making the fans spin whole day and night? What kind of malware is going arround here?

Kind regards

PS: with top I see that

ksysguard, Xorg and kwin together use about 12-13% of CPU (no others have frequently more than 0%), but the CPU load in Ksysguard is constantly at 20 to 40% for each of the 2 CPUs…

What is going on here?

Install **iotop **and run it as root.

See if any processes are using IO, such as Baloo which seems to be indexing everything constantly and causing loads.

Hi Miuku!

That was it! I entered “Baloo” and disabled the destop search, no we are back to more normal CPU usage and the IO I saw in iotop subsided…

Many thanks!
