"No output or input devices" after zypper dup, only Dummy Output in pipewire on Tumbleweed

Hi, can someone help me with an issue? Yesterday, after zypper dup (which I perform every week) all sound disappeared from my system. KDE sound settings show following:

Audio is working fine on my Windows 10 installation and on another distro launched from Live USB, so it seems to be a software issue and not a hardware problem.

I have tried solving it by:

  • Restarting system
  • Running systemctl --user restart pipewire wireplumber pipewire-pulse
  • Running systemctl --user enable --now wireplumber pipewire
  • Reinstalling alsa, pipewire, pipewire-pulseaudio, pipewire-alsa and wireplumber
But nothing has helped so far.

wireplumber-audio was removed in recent days. You might want to test if its absence is involved by rolling back, locking wireplumber-audio, and upgrading again, to see if your audio is restored.

I have used tumblweed-cli to revert to older snapshot (20250508) and install wireplumber-audio and it worked! Thank you!

You have your sound back for now, but next update may remove it again if you don’t do as I suggested. Steps to proceed:

  1. lock wireplumber-audio: sudo zypper al wireplumber-audio
  2. sudo zypper ref && sudo zypper dup
  3. reboot to test whether audio still works

Afterward, provide input/output here from inxi -Aaz, and if audio is still working, consider reporting a bug. The former is to show us your audio setup in its working state, while the latter may be needed to aid in avoiding it happening to others, and start the ball rolling on fixing whatever went wrong.

It seems that zypper doesn’t allow me updating without either removing lock from wireblumber-audio, or locking both it and wireplumber.

[EDIT]: I tried removing lock from wireplumber-audio and updating, but it resulted in audio disappearing again. I have restored it by reinstalling older packages.

Can you let the update complete, and show us the results of
systemctl --user status wireplumber

Should I let zypper remove lock from wireplumber-audio?

My mistake not thinking ahead. I should have noted that you would get that conflict with the new wireplumber and need to choose the keep old package selection so that the remainder of the dup could proceed. What I also didn’t foresee was some, most, or all those related audio packages would also conflict and need to be retained, the result of which would probably be to learn nothing from the exercise for bug report purposes, but merely to retain working audio on an otherwise up-to-date installation.

Edit: keep the lock for now.

Should I write a bug report then? It seems unlikely that this issue will be resolved by itself.

If you do not, you may need to keep that lock for a long time, until someone else beats you to it, or developers otherwise determine something related to wireplumber needs fixing. It could be it’s only a problem for those with hardware and/or software closely matching yours.

OP reported on bugzilla.

Yes, I was in a hurry and forgot to write back here

Does the problem exist if you create a new user and login as the new user? Not just a stale config somewhere?

Hmm, I will try it tomorrow and report back

It looks like you’re right. I have created a new user and audio works fine on it. On my main account there was an old config file in ~/.config/wireplumber/. I have removed it and restarted wireplumber after which audio issues disappeared.

Sorry for making a lot of fuss about this issue, I have completely forgotten that this file existed (

Thanks for the update. I’ve seen no similar recent reports online, hence my suspicion that it was something specific to your user environment. Don’t forget to update your bug report if you haven’t done so already.

You should also mark the appropriate post as the solution.
