I find that I am getting kicked out from my openSUSE forum login every few hours. This is very irritating. I didn’t find a “keep me logged in on this device” option at the login page. What gives?

That’s the way “they” want it (whoever “they” is).
As far as I know, your login is timed out after a while. If you visit the site before it times out, that “while” is extended. But I’m not sure of the details. I can only go by my own experience.
Until recently, I used “firefox”, and I would sometimes have to login two or three times per day. If I terminated the browser, the session cookie would immediately expire so I would have to login on my next visit.
I avoided konqueror and rekonq, because they are a bit too prone to crash. And, when they crash, you are restarting the browser and losing session cookies.
I recently had a “bright” idea. I run “akregator”, mostly for reading blogs. But I was reading opensuse security announcements there too. So I decided to try login to the forums in akregator. This works pretty well. Because akregator, rekonq and konqueror share cookies, if I login using akregator then I am automatically seen as logged in with “rekonq” and “konqueror”. And it won’t matter if “rekonq” crashes. Because “akregator” owns that session cookie, it will take a restart of “akregator” before I lose my login.
For a while, this worked unexpectedly well. I was staying logged in for up to three days. Presumably, that is because akregator is periodically presenting its forum cookie when it checks it feeds, and that was keeping my login alive.
But something has changed. My login now dies after around half a day. The visits of akregator to the site are no longer keeping the cookie alive.
I’ll probably go back to using “firefox”. Copy/paste is broken for rekonq/akregator (seems to be a forum bug, not a browser bug). Maybe I should tell “rekonq” to pretend that it is “firefox” when visiting the forum.

This question has been asked and answered many times in the forums
feedback forum (and possibly here as well), so I’ll refer you to the
answers there.
The timeout is, as I recall, 8 hours, and is extended any time you
perform an operation that requires you be authenticated.

So if I use the NNTP interface (with its limitations) I don’t need to go through the bother of entering the password everytime?
I’ll have to say that I don’t find it much bother. My browser remembers the password, and fills it in as needed.
I’m currently posting with “rekonq”. The forum password is remembered in “kwallet”. The same remembered password is shared by “Akregator”, “konqueror” and “rekonq”. I have to unlock “kwallet” once per KDE session (typically twice per week).
When using “firefox”, I do have saved passwords locked. So I have to unlock that once per firefox session (typically once per day).
Apart from that, the only “bother” is one additional screen every so often.
And, by the way, copy-paste now seems to work properly in “rekonq” after I set it to pretend that it is firefox (the browser identification setting).

Saying this in a friendly way, just so you know: Personally, I have no problems with entering the password every time I log into the forums. I use Firefox, and I do not permit it to save any passwords. For security reasons, I like logging in and logging out.

I just let Firefox store the password and enter it automatically. I only
have to remember the master password for the FF store, instead of the
passwords for dozens of different sites (I never reuse passwords).
Only sites that involve money I don’t let FF to store, but I type.

I probably do not have as many sites where I need to log in with a password as you have.
