I have both torrented and ftp downloaded the OpenSUSE 10.3 cd for installation and installation has failed both times. After configuring and installing, the first time that the system restarts, just before the root password step, on the restart I get a “Booting from local disk…No operating system” message. This is frustrating because one of the times I set up the repositories and the installation took nearly 6 hours, only to have it fail. The boot media checked out ok, what can I do to fix this so I hopefully don’t have to reinstall yet again. Thanks.

Hi
Do you have a single disk or multiple? How did you setup the
partitioning?

SLED 10.0 SP2 x86_64 Kernel 2.6.16.60-0.23-smp
up 7 days 11:02, 0 users, load average: 0.46, 0.24, 0.27
GPU GeForce 8600 GTS Silent - Driver Version: 173.14.09
It is a single disk on a laptop. I was running SLED 10 on it but used the installer to format and created a custom partition. I told it to use the entire disk, which was the same as I did back when I installed SLED 10, and like I said, when it reboots after installing, it comes up with the no operating system error.
I have had the same problem twice in the past. On my computers, the problem was that GRUB was not installed correctly. The cause of the problem may be different in your case, however. When I had that problem, I noticed that GRUB was not getting installed to the MBR; it was getting installed onto the first section of one of the disk’s partitions instead. The MBR also contained a reference to an operating system that used to exist, but did not exist any longer. Thus, from BIOS, my computer would then look at the GRUB file on the MBR, look for an OS that wasn’t there, and then display a message that there was no bootable operating system. I fixed this error by booting from the DVD and using the rescue function, then re-installing GRUB to the MBR. However, there may be many other ways to fix this problem, if it is in fact what occurred in your case.

Another way to fix this same issue as I recall, as I have had it in the
past too, is to wipe the MBR so that the active partition on your hard
drive is checked instead. I seem to recall Yast had that option as well.
Good luck.
