after initial distro install (ubuntu, suse, etc) network connection exists, can access internet through browser. After the first reboot, connection is gone, although eth0 is recognized.
never had this problem before. always connected and stayed connected with every reboot.
Connection is through ATT spreadstream dsl modem, then Linksys router. Wifi works fine. Problem is with wired. Problem appeared after I used bit torrent to attempt download of Mint OS.
Could router have been “adjusted” by torrent software? (I’m a newbie).
I had a simular problem with a Realtek RTL811E network chipset. Basically, it worked at first, but failed to connect on reboot and the Link light just kept blinking on/off as if unable to determine the proper network speed. You could go into network setup and fix its speed at 100 mb and get it to work even though it is 1 GB in speed. Some say that if you shut down your computer completely, even killing the actual power and then turning it back on can cause it to work again. Check these symptom’s out and let us know if any of them match your case.

My mother’s pc has this characteristic, when rebooting from MS-Windows to Linux (but NOT when going from Linux to MS-Windows). The only way to get the network to work on her PC, when going from Windows to Linux was to shut down the PC. Then switch ON to Linux.
When rebooting from Linux to Linux her PC fortunately does not have the problem.
