No more sound after most recent update

I have a Toshiba laptop I’ve been running SUSE on since 12.1, and never had a problem with sound. Currently running 13.1. Latest round of updates took my sound away: ALL the sound. Using gstreamer backend, sound driver is snd_hda_intel, lspci shows it’s loaded. All sliders turned up to max.I don’t hear any sound in the sound tests.
That’s all I know. Can some please help me get my sound back?

What were the latest round of updates ?

Are you certain this is not a hardware problem (cable connected incorrectly) ?

Have you tried installing pulse audio volume control (pavucontrol) and used to to configure pulse audio ? There is guidance here: https://forums.opensuse.org/blogs/oldcpu/pulseaudio-basics-opensuse-pavucontrol-96/

Does your basic audio work ? Do you obtain audio from either of these two commands if entered in a terminal/konsole :

speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav

or this command:

speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav

(it should repeat 5 times)

Seems ok now. All I did was plug in a pair of headphones, then unplug them, then the sound came back. Just one of those things, I guess. Thanks anyway!

Glad to read its working now. Thanks for sharing your solution.

I have a touchy plug and a wire jiggle can sometimes lose sound and another get it back/ I really should fix that :open_mouth:

Hmm…:
Seems I have to plug in the headphones then unplug every time I reboot. Annoying!
Is there a system setting somewhere that should take care of that?

I’m not sound guru, but perhaps this is a PulseAudio config issue. Open a terminal and do

aplay -l
pacmd list

Post the output here. Maybe an edit to /etc/pulse/default.pa is required. Hopefully others can advise further.

I can only point you at

On my Toshiba Z930 ultrabook, I need to use pavucontrol to tune whether sound goes to (1) output, (2) speakers, or (3) headphones. Its possibly your PC has something similar with pavucontrol
