No login prompt after boot (automatic login)

Hello,

I installed SuSE 11 a couple of weeks ago on my desktop. The installation mostly went fine, besides some minor problems. One of those is the following:

After I boot the system, there is no login prompt displayed (as it was with SuSE versions I had installed previously). Instead, the KDE desktop is started immediately and the user which I created during the installation of SuSE 11 is automatically logged in (without having to enter his password). Although I created additional users since, I cannot use them because every time I start the computer, KDE is automatically started with the first user logged in.

As I intend to install SuSE 11 on my laptop as well, I would appreciate the answer to the following questions:

  1. What is the purpose for the behavior described above, what do I have to do differently during a next installation in order to start with a login prompt after the system is booted.

  2. How can I fix my existing installation, such that (a) a user cannot login without entering the password and (b) I can choose the user under which I work in KDE.

Thanks for any help
with kind regards
Martin

Uncheck auto-login
OK

hi,

caf4926 answered part of your question, i have an answer for this part:

> 1) What is the purpose for the behavior described above,

to allow folks who want it to go directly to their desktop…very
conveniently for single user machines…

> what do I have
> to do differently during a next installation in order to start with a
> login prompt after the system is booted.

look at this page (a pix of the 11.1 install routine):

http://en.opensuse.org/INSTALL_Local#Step_7:_Create_your_user

see that box labeled “Automatic Login”? UNcheck it and your new system
will not auto-login…

additionally, i highly recommend you also UNcheck the “Use this
password for system administrator” box and instead give root a STRONG
password…

Hello,

Thank you very much for your answers. The update in “Security and Users” solved my problem. And now I also know how to prevent it for the next installation.

Just for curiosity and to broaden my Linux knowledge I have an additional question. Don’t spend any time to look for the answer, since its purely for curiosity, but if you just happen to know the answer I’d be interested. Where is the information about autologin stored (i.e. which file(s) get updated, when I make the described changes in “Security and Users”…->…-> “Expert Options”)?

Thanks
with kind regards
Martin

/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager is the file you were asking about Martin.
