Hello
I have installed Suse 11.1
After instaling my nvidia driver and restart my computer, I had only a terminal. No kde manager.
Only a black screen with terminal. What can I do. How can I run my terminal.
Any idea?
Try typing startx and see if that starts your DE (Desktop Environment aka KDE)
Edit: If that still doesn’t start KDE then try typing in sax2 so you can reconfigure your monitor.
When the terminal login comes up log in with your user and do the following:
Switch to root account with
su
.
Before reconfiguring the X server switch to runlevel 3 type:
init 3
then reconfigure your X server with:
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
^^ 0 - is a digit, NOT a letter.
. If everything is fine a window will come up, click to the OK - it’ll switch back to the terminal session. You can reboot now with:
reboot
.
Hope that helps.
I tried everything and I couldnot start kde. I had to reinstall Suse.
Then I try to install again my video card and I lost my KDe again.
What is wrong what I do? I install my videocard this way:NVIDIA - openSUSE
I just click to button install and everything si automatical.
So, I had to install my suse 11,1 again. Third time, but this time, I will not install my video card this way :
If I dont install my video card, I cannot run my second screen. Pleae any advice?
My video card is Nvidia 8400 GS
here is the log

are you sure you have an nVidia card? Because it sure doesn’t look like openSUSE sees it.
You don’t need to reinstall openSUSE, as it is pretty easy to reset the video driver.
The log says:
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. Please check your
(EE) NVIDIA: system's kernel log for additional error messages.
are u sure that your card is supported by the latest nVidia driver?
To reset your video card configuration do the same process what I explained in my first post but the 3rd command should be
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
.
Good luck.
I can reset my video config with this comand sax2 -r -m 0=vesa?
Do I need to make backup before?
So, what advace will you give me? How can I install my video card?
First you need to find out the type of your video card with:
su
hwinfo --gfxcard
In the output text search for the line which begins with Model. Now take a look to the list of supported cards here: Appendix*A.*Supported NVIDIA Graphics Chips.
If your card is supported, make sure that you have the right driver package installed NVIDIA - openSUSE. There are are 3 different driver packages: for the new nVidia cards (Geforce 6 and newer), for Geforce FX (5xxx) cards and for the Legacy cards (Geforce 4 and older, TNT).
If your card isn’t supported reset the settings with
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
Sax will automatically make a backup file.
I installed my video card, but when I restart I have no KDE.
Can I make something more?
Do you have one of the new cards or laptop-GPU’s ? They are not recognized by the official drivers yet.
Please boot the system, login with username and password and do this:
wget ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/190.18/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.18-pkg1.run
–This downloads the latest beta-driver
yast
–This starts the yast terminal interface. Start the Software Manager and install the Pattern “Linux Kernel Development”. Exit Yast afterwards
su -c ‘init 3’
–Enter root password. This brings the sytem in runlevel 3. Hit Enter to see command line again.
su -c ‘sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.18-pkg1.run -q’
–Enter root password. This starts the NVIDIA installer. Accept the license and hit Enter when prompted for. After install do:
su -c ‘sax2 -r -m0=nvidia’
–Enter root password. At first screen (be patient) pick ‘Change configuration’. If the card is new, it will show as Frame Buffer Device, don’t mind, in Options/Properties tick RenderAccel and NoLogo. Check monitor, screen resolution. Save and exit.
init 5 && exit
–The runlevel is brought to 5 (incl. graphical desktop). You should now see the beauty of KDE4…
Assuming that your card isn’t supported by the latest drivers, the only thing left is to reset the X server configuration.
In the terminal session log in, then
su //it'll ask for the root password
init 3
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
reboot
ps.: What is the model of your video card?
My video card is Nvidia eforce 8400 GS
It is supported? I tried 3 times this way: NVIDIA - openSUSE
and I dont know if I want to risque again.
Knurpht, is that method better then this methid:NVIDIA - openSUSE
What do you think?
Thats the card I am using, Nvidia GeForce 8400GS. When I reinstalled Suse 11.1 all I did was install Nvidia-Settings and the Nvidia driver from Yast Software Management. Worked fine for me and was quick.
How did you install Nvidia-Settings
I put it on the Yast2 insatall software, but I cannot find it.
I believe it is from the Packman repository. You can find it at this list.
Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE
If I remember correctly I have to open Konsole and sign in as root and then type in nvidia-settings that way any changes I make won’t be lost.
The Nvidia-Settings comes together with the nvidia driver, you can start it with:
nvidia-settings
. Once the driver is installed, the settings manager is installed too.
O, I understand
So, I have not the driver installed
