Hi Kenneth. Maybe you have a wired ethernet link to the internet, maybe wireless. There are many options so it’s difficult to advise. Tell us in detail how you connect to the internet so we can focus our advice.
In the meantime you could read one or both of these tutorials:
HowTo Configure a network card in Suse/openSUSE 10, 11 for LAN and Internet Access.
Madwifi or Ndiswrapper Wireless Network Drivers - Suse/openSUSE 10, 11 - LAN & Internet access
Hy
Try to remove support for ipv6, it worked for me…
If you go to yast, network, network devices…then just play around and you will see where you can do that.
Hey…
Thanks for your answers -I will read and play…
Return if i don`t fix it…
I have wired network…Works back with win98 without a problem…
Hello again…
I followed both advices, but didnt work for me. My internet is wired using a netgear Router and a Ruby switch...I have two cards on my pc -one integrated, which I don
t use, and one Realteak, I think…which is the one Im using It seems, that I don
t get an Ip adress when I boot up…Can it be true…?Is there a way to check IP under Linux -or is it maybe a driverproblem…? Again, how can I check…?
Thanks
Kenneth
So you have a router – netgear. More info would help us – try this –>
This command in a console will show the IP address:
sudo /sbin/ifconfig
Paste here what you get. Also paste here what you get from this command, which identifies the card/s:
sudo /sbin/lspci -nn
Also, what is the IP address of the router and is it set to deliver IP addresses as a DHCP server?
Also, have you configured in Yast for the Realtek card to receive an IP address by DHCP?
This command in a console will show the IP address:
Code:
sudo /sbin/ifconfig
How do I make a console…?
IP adress of router is:
192.168.0.1
Also, have you configured in Yast for the Realtek card to receive an IP address by DHCP?
I`m almost certain
looking forward

A console is also known as a terminal window. In windows it’s the black mini screen/window containing the “command prompt”.
In KDE it’s in the menu at Start → applications → system → terminal → Konsole
In Gnome it’s at Computer → More Applications → System → Gnome Terminal
Hello again. this is what I get, when I type in the two commands…The router is set up correct, and the card is set up to receive an IP adress by DHCCP…

You have two ethernet cards:
I’ve Googled them both and can’t find any problems with them in Linux.
When you open Yast → network Devices → Network Settings, you should see two ethernet cards listed in the upper panel. And when you highlight them you should see in the lower panel the configuration summary for the highlighted card.
Q1: do you see two cards in the upper panel?
Q2: what is said in the lower panel for each card when you highlight it in the upper panel?
So it seems to me that you should plug the ethernet cable into one of the cards and configure that card in Yast using the sequence of screenshots from the tutorial for wired cards listed in my post above. In particular you can use the defaults for openSUSE. See the heading titled Dynamic IP Setup I - The Suse/openSUSE Defaults. Pics 1 to 6 inclusive
Hello again -and thanks for your patience…
Q1: I can see the two cards.
Q2: ULi 1689, 1573 integrated ethernet, not connected
Mac: 00:13:8f:37:54:08
-device name: eth0
-starts when plugging cable in
-ip adress by dhcp
RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+
Mac:00:e0:7d:da:84:0a
-device name: eth1
-start when boot
-ip adress by dhcp
I have tried to configure using your guide several times, but doesnt work. I get a warning from Conqueror saying: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or error..." Don
t know if this has something to do with it…?
Is Suse like Windows, that you have to reboot everytime, something is changed in the system…?
Lokking forward to hear from you again
Kenneth

This is good – set for DHCP. But the card is not getting an IP address? So check the electrical connectivity. Look at the back of the card and see if plugging/unplugging the cable starts/stops lights on the card and starts/stops lights on the router/switch. If you can, bypass the switch and plug directly into an ethernet port on the router (one less complication while testing). Also, if possible try a different ethernet cable.
So: do all these tests succeed and indicate good connectivity?
Regarding this:
I get a warning from Conqueror saying: “mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or error…”
That’s a different problem and should no affect IP addressing.
Regarding this:
Is Suse like Windows, that you have to reboot everytime, something is changed in the system…?
No (only occasionally – generally not)
Hey!
All conections are ok. I´ve got dual boot with XP, and no problems. Luckily -else I could`t write to you
Kenneth
We can try some things, maybe one at a time. So try these next three things one at a time:
Go into the bios. You can access that at boot time. Switch off the “ALi Corporation ULi 1689,1573 integrated ethernet” card. Maybe they are interfering with each other.
Does the Realtek work now?
Check the kernel modules for the Realtek card. Go to Yast → Network devices → Network Settings → highlight the “RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+” → edit → Hardware tab → Module name: (a) what’s showing and (b) what other modules exist in the drop-down list under Module Name? (two questions). Make sure the module “8139too” is in the frame.
Does it work now?
Give the Reakltek card a fixed IP address e.g. 192.168.0.150. You’ve got the guide for that – Screenshots 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9
Does it work now?
Hey
-still here -just some other projects to attend to. Looking forward to try your advices…
