No "install" option on welcome menu

So, I’ve decided to install opensuse 13.1 side to side with my windows 8 on my new machine. After downloading the live KDE version and burning it to a DVD I booted from the DVD but the welcome menu (this one) does not have the option “install”. Other options were present that offered running a test off the DVD and a media test, but nothing that indicated installation.

I have an Acer Aspire V with an intel core i7, Nvidia GT 750M, 8 GB RAM, and 1TB HDD. It came with windows 8 64-bit pre-installed.

Can anyone point out what went wrong here?

openSUSE_13.1_KDE_Live
Failsafe – oepnSUSE_13.1_KDE_Live
mediacheck
Boot from Hard Disk

Select the first (should be the default, if I recall).

Once you are booted into KDE, there will be an “install” icon on the desktop. Click that, though you might want to look around first.

An added comment.

You probably have a UEFI box. The boot menu gives fewer options for UEFI than for a traditional legacy system.

The live KDE or Gnome versions are different than the full DVD version,
or the NET install version. The install menu is missing. You have first
to boot it, and then somewhere in the desktop or the menu there should
be an option for install.

The idea is that you try the live system first, and if you like it,
click install.

Thanks guys!

after installing, I restarted my machine expecting to find a boot manager to select an OS. Yet it automatically loaded Windows 8. How can I fix this?

On my UEFI boxes, I can press F12 during boot, and get a BIOS screen to select which system boots. I gather that for HP systems, it is F9 rather than F12.

Look around and see what is possible.

Another thing to try:

Boot the live KDE system. Get a terminal, and use “su” to become root. Then check the output from


# efibootmgr -v

Post that output here (using code tags).

That will tell us something about your install.
