No hardware acceleration after updating nvidia G05 driver (Opensuse Plasma)

Hello all,

I installed Opensuse Tumbleweed with Plasma about a couple of months ago and the nvidia G05 driver installation went pretty smoothly and everything worked just fine.

A while ago, I got an update to the nvidia driver (and the kernel, I think), which I install, as I usually do, through Plasma’s update applet. After rebooting, I logged on normally but noticed the graphics were laggy and there were no desktop effects

. When I tried to run nvidia-settings, I got this:

> nvidia-settings

ERROR: An internal driver error occurred

ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

It feels like the driver is not properly loaded for some reason – maybe it didn’t get built? Any ideas?

Problem solved.

After some digging, I found out the userland side of the nvidia driver was running on version 470.223, but the kernel module was still in the previously installed version, 470.199.

The reason: this installation of Opensuse is a dualboot with Debian, and the GRUB installation is managed by debian. So after my update, Opensuse’s grub entry wasn’t updated, which made it point to the older kernel with the older nvidia kernel module. Just booting into Debian and running update-grub2 solved my issue.
