no gnome panel
no apparent way of re-adding / recreating
tried reinstalling gnome modules
creating a new user -same issue…

Is this a a new install? Did you check the md5sum and the media?
If a new user doesn’t have a panel, then something is very awry… Could be that the gnome-panel package wasn’t installed - could be that installing it will fix it.
Could well be that your entire install is bust… So personally I’d run the checks before I even bothered trying to fix it.
i originally got this from a new install, ended up having to setup the whole os from dvd what a process
now the issue is back which was running fine for months
i even raised a bug but thats been open for months no progress.

i can’t keep blasting the os just to get a stable working desktop
the way this opensuse gnome is going i won’t be bothering with 11.2,quite clearly there is no testing and little emphasis on providing a decent desktop.
i have have nothing but issues with
1.high cpu caused by pulse =solution don’t use it go back to esound pulse is rubbish
2. xine crashing unable to play anything, what else…
3. nvidia kernel drivers no longer compiling under newer kernel (ok so nvidia won’t upkeep the legacy driver…),
4. no longer able to write to a FAT usb drive,what else…

this doesn’t work neither:
gconftool-2 --shutdown
* rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
* pkill gnome-panel
gnome-panel keeps restarting and impossible to “kill”…

I appreciate that you’re in a bad mood, but digging up every thread in which someone complains about this and posting “Me too! >:(>:(>:(” is not going to help.

You might actually find 11.2 works better - and you might try asking some

With regards to your GNOME panel problem, let’s start by having you open
a terminal window and type “ps ax | grep panel” (without the quotes,
natch) and see if it’s even running.
It may be that the configuration is messed up, and that’s also fairly
easily correctable, but let’s start by making sure it’s actually running.
