No ecosia webbrowser after installation

Hi, all. Newbie here. I have followed the instructions from
https://snapcraft.io/install/ecosia/opensuse#install.
However, click the start icon and it bounces a few times and nothing happens?
what do I need to do to get Ecosia working as my web browser?

I know nothing about this product, but a general advise when a GUI program does not start when “clicking on it” is to start it from a terminal emulator. Then you can see eventual messages. And of course post them here to get help.

Maybe you have enabled the wrong Repo?

Another possible issue is that Leap 16 uses Selinux by default and the Ecosia instructions refer to AppArmor…

Wrong stuff I said

Is there a particular reason why you want the Snap version? Ecosia is available as a Flatpak which has a lot fewer compatibility issues compared to Snap. Try installing it as a Flatpak from Discover before messing with Snaps.

Even the official support page recommends using “flat pack,” although they don’t guarantee compatibility with non-Ubuntu distributions.

Edit: Nevermind, it seems that they aren’t updating the “flat pack” anymore and haven’t changed their support page to reflect this.

It is in Flathub; I have just installed it in Leap 16 and opened the Forums in it. If you haven’t installed any Flatpaks, check out Flatpak. If you have, you can install it now.

You should read what ikanotheokara wrote. Ecosia on flathub is unmaintained and recieved the last update 4 month ago (version 148.1.7778.10) whilst the snap is at version 152.0.7977.8

So yeah, if you don’t care about a secure browser, use the outdated flatpak version instead of snap.

@Rocinante There is another actual upstream bugreport for a crash of Ecosia when starting the snap.

Unfortunately, there seems no activity from the maintainers. I would change to a browser which is properly maintained.

I agree with this sentiment, OP.

If you want to help the environment, instead of letting someone sell your personal data to plant a few trees, just install a better maintained browser that respects your privacy (ahem), and donate a few dollars/euros/renminbi to the charity of your choice.

The outdated support pages don’t instill confidence in the project’s competence, regardless of their good intentions.

I confirm a crash of Ecosia when starting the snap on my openSuse Tumbleweed Slowroll Virtual Box

A lot of useful testing / feedback happening …

But oddly enough, it’s now been three days since @Rocinante posted this , and has provided ZERO feedback, for all the suggestions.

Maybe @Rocinante is no longer interested in the issue (?)

To be honest, yes! I wold like to go this route of getting away from the mainstream programmes/apps whatever? that rather gullible people use. However, I have digested what everyone, no doubt more into the Linux world, than myself? I have been forced to use MS and Google during the years that I taught. I was first introduced to Linux as a mature student, with a keen interest in learning practically everything, by flat sharing with Computer students in the late 90’s. SuSE was my choice of flavour and I’ve mostly self-taught (with the help of forum memebers, much appreciated all!) myself all the little I know.
Will I continue with Ecosia, nah! seems they’re not interested in maintaining a safe product?
I use the Android app, use Ecosia for a search engine, web browsers are synonymous with selling personal data, gotta keep the wolves from the door Innit!
I don’t suppose you have any ideas on porting sailfish to a Motorola g84?

Don’t. If a safe browser is what you want don’t do sailfishos. Or use chrome using the android bridge.

If you want a safe mobile device without mainstream programs/apps use grapheneos on a pixel device. Rocksolid, extremely safe and quite private.

Or have a look at e/OS to be less Pixel bound.
