No device found at boot

Hi all

After changing my motherboard (MB)and ram my suse 11.1 desktop pc is not booting anymore.
I can see the boot menu but then i’m stuck.

I have 4 disks, i plugged the disks exactly as before and the bios is booting on the Western Digital (WD) hard disk(but i have 2 of the same kind which does not help).

If i switch the 2 WD disks connection on the MB i have a Grub #17 error and not boot which makes me think my connections are ok.

Mother Board is Asus P5N T Deluxe,
Ram is 1* 2Go of G Skill DDR2 800 PC2 6400 (i took of the other 2GO for it was impeding the pc to start at all).

Here’s the error message i’m left with :
could not find /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WPC-WD1600PD-07FZB1-WD-WMAES3562221-part2
Want me to fall back on /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WPC-WD1600PD-07FZB1-WD-WMAES3562221-part2 ? (Y/n)
waiting for device to appear … … not found, exiting to /bin/sh

(WD in the error message show this is the Western Digital disk disturbing)

Any idea where it’s coming from and what to do from now ?

Thanks

You need to boot with the install dvd and repair

Ok, but repair what ? Something specific ?
What has been ‘broken’ ? Why ?

Didn’t you just change your Mobo?

Unless it’s identical. It’s like changing the engine in your car and connecting all the old parts. (Well, that’s just a bit of Hyperbole, but you see what I mean).
I’m trying to remember the exact proceedure. I think you boot and proceed as if for install, then at this page: Installation/11.1 DVD Install - openSUSE
Select the Repair option, automatic, done.

i forgot about this, you’re right : i’ll try this, so far i can’t find my 11.1 install dvd , i need to burn another one.

No worries, let us know if you have problems.

Regards
Carl

thanks

ok the repair did work but i could not set up the ethernet config so to have the internet access. I had 2 cards and did not know what to set up, which one …
I had no lights at the switch, and behind the pc which made me think the ethernet outlet was ko. But it’s perfectly ok for when i run system rescue live cd and # net-setup eth0 and then ifcondig 1st of all i have 2 ok ip adress but at 2d try i can set up a correct ip address and and thus have web access.

Could you tell me what to do to have the equivalent on suse ?
i used #net-setup eth0 but it does not work on Suse , i went to yast/hardware and set up the card that was not set up, then reboot but i still have no ip adress when i #ifconfig , so no access to the web.

Thanks

Assuming nothing has changed at the router end, let’s concentrate at the Box. If this is a PCI card it will likely work better. If on-board could be more tricky.
I could do with knowing what you have. If you open a terminal become su and do:

lscpi -v

post result

some commands in a console did not help for the grep in lib/modules did not work (instead of narrowinf the search , a driver in 0373 …) and the forcedeth driver that’s used by sys rescue live cd is already there (the live cd needs two set ups of the same device, i checked : same mac adress, to be able to have a valid ip adress and then acces the web).
