No Desktop Opensuse 11.4

Hello i have installed Opensuse 11.4 and the desktop won’t start i get an green striped screen, i have tried to run yast but it seems mine NVIDIA isn’t correct installed.

I have an NVidia SE6150 Graphic Card and i have tried to configure the startup parameter vga=0x317, i have changed this to vga=0 to get vesa mode but that doesn’t work, i have an wide screen monitor that supports 24 bit and 1360x768.

Please help me with starting the desktop.

I have a couple of 6150 and I know there are problematic. I’m not even sure that nouveau will work (even with nomodeset) with this model. It looks like you’ll have to boot in runlevel 3 (by adding the parameter 3) and install the nividia driver in console mode. To do so, log in as root and type the following commands:

zypper ar ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/ nvidia
zypper refresh
zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG02

That would be the easiest, I guess.

I do not want to interfere with the excelent advise from please_try_again. But be aware that the pictures shown bu 11.4 on the screen at boot and login are striped in different tones of green verticaly. I say because some people seem to think that there is something wrong here, but it is by “design”. Apart from that, when you do not see the login fields for user/password and the like, there is something wrong.

Actually the console is kind of green and striped too. See the picture in this post! The green is not too bright in this virtual machine but in text mode on a monitor, it is brighter. BTW I don’t think the striped background is a very good idea (it looks indeed like something broken).

It very much looks like something is broken. It was the first thing I thought after I put in the 11.4 DVD for the first time: “sigh, it does not see my screen correct”. Then you realise that all important things like text, etc. are shown correct and the blood pressure can go down again.

But I only wrote my post above to be sure the OP is not confused by this phenomenon. But I doubt he would have posted like he has as he could fill in the logon fields. Let us wait for his reaction.
