No desktop after zypper dup

The zypper dup today looked like a fairly major update. I applied it to PC1 (see below) with the usual repo line-up (11.4 updates, 11.4 OSS and non OSS, KDE46). On rebooting, all seemed well until the splash screen faded out, leaving nothing but the mouse pointer. I know KDE has started because I hear the music and if I click around on the desktop, sometimes get lucky and hit an icon.

Nothing gets me a KDE desktop (including nomodeset, failsafe, logging in as root), but I can start ICE and use the kicker to run everything (including this post). I’m puzzled.

Please confirm your repo list

zypper lr -d

and run this

su -
zypper ve

the same for me, the desktop gently become black, sound ok, it happens also if I choice kde plasma desktop failsafe

Are you sure you have R46 and not R47?

Try pressing
ALT+SHIFT+F12

i think i’ve seen users with KDE 4.6 complaining about the same
black-screen issues that hit the KDE 4.7 repos. but if KDE failsafe
doesn’t, which excludes desktop effects, doesn’t help, this doesn’t seem
to be the issue here.

in any case, one you get to that black desktop, what (if anything) happens
if you press ALT+SHIFT+F12?

That failsafe doesn’t work is worrying.

I’m fairly busy but I’ll keep an eye on this as much as I can.

to get desktop effects working again right now, you’ll have to add this
repo:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/namtrac:/branches:/KDE:/Qt/openSUSE_11.4/

and use yast software management to switch to the packages in this repo.
alternatively, you can wait for a day or two until the fix for this
problem comes down to all the mirrors. that would be much easier, and
running w/o desktop effects for a day doesn’t seem too horrible to me…

i don’t think this will work for you, but you can still try to press
ALT+SHIFT+F12 and see if this makes any difference.

i don’t know what may be afflicting your KDE 4.6 install, but what’s the
reason you don’t use 4.7? that seems pretty stable and the bug that causes
black screen has been fixed, even though for the moment you need to enable
another Qt repo
(http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/namtrac:/branches:/KDE:/Qt/openSUSE_11.4/)
if you want to use desktop effects.

It will be hard, but I’m reasonably confident that I will survive this truly catastrophic couple of days without the very indispensable desktop effects ;)

I haven’t tried 4.7 yet because I’m lazy, but will give it a try

I’ve been following 2 threads; 1 about black desktop and the other about screen resolution. I had both problems. I ran lxde for a little bit and then turned off effects for kde so I could go back to it. Patience is a virtue. My zypper up today brought in several qtlibs and all is back to normal. No repo change needed.

Same issue here on my laptop after update today, ALT-SHIFT-F12 works. Definitely no 47, only 46.

Yesterday decided to upgrade to KDE 4.7 on both desktop PC’s plus Nvidia instead of nouveau. No problems, everything looking good.
