No desktop after unlocking screensaver

Hello, I have something breaking the desktop and I am not sure what.
The default screen lock timeout engages normally and when I come back, I unlock the screen as normal. After about 5-6 times of this, the desktop does not come back when I unlock the screen. Only the cursor with an all black screen on both monitors and nothing more. My only recourse is to ssh in from a different machine and reboot.

Any thoughts on what I can do? Or how to proceed.

Also, this has been this way since the install and I left it thinking an update would probably resolve this but… no luck there.

When the screen “doesn’t come back”, might try switching to the main CLI using (Console 1):
Ctrl-Alt-F1.
You can do a couple of things at this point.

At the CLI, log in as the root user:

Read thru the systemd log file for clues.

Or, at the CLI as root switch to Runlevel 3. Then switch to the graphical environment.

What am I looking for that would be worth noting?

I see:
plasmashell: QRhiGles2: Context is lost
plasmashell: Graphics device lost, cleaning up scenegraph and releasing RHI
kscreenlocker_greet: PAM adding faulty module: /usr/lib64/security/pam+pkcs11.so
unable to open dlopn(/usr/lib64/security/pam_pkcs11.so) No such file or directory.
DiscoverNotifier: packagekitqt.offline: Cannot process “org.freedesktop.PackageKit” as “org.freedektop.PackageKit.Offline”

and other messages from pulseaudio and qt.svg.

Let me know how to proceed.
Thanks Redburn
