no connection / DHCP with eth

I encounter a strange behaviour when installing 15.2.

network connection to the router fails via eth0 / LAN cable.
the error message says “IP configuration unavailable”.

strange:

  • the installation itself was done via the LAN cable. the error occured after the first boot.
  • the LAN cable is working fine with another computer
  • WiFi is working

journactl -f says:

any ideas about how to etsablish a LAN connection via cable?

Hi!

Are you using NetworkManager or Wicked (see YaST -> “Network Settings”)?

Did you configure the LAN interface, i.e. DHCP ipv4 and/or ipv6, depending on your DHCP server/router settings for your LAN?

I’m using NetworkManager, as you can see from journalctl output.

eth configuration (in plasma/Network/Manager) is identical to that on the computer on which eth is working (with opensuse 15.1). no configuration was modified on the router.
I didn’t change any configuration on the router since it works for other computers for cable as well as for WiFi.
Is that what you were asking for?

Do you observe the same problem with wicked or after configuring IP manually?

seems to work with wicked:

ip addr with NetworkManager:

2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP group default qlen 1000
link/ether 54:e1:ad:56:8b:19 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet6 fe80::c8b6:dc43:a5a6:8122/64 scope link noprefixroute
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

ip addr with wicked:

2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP group default qlen 1000
link/ether 54:e1:ad:56:8b:19 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.178.58/24 brd 192.168.178.255 scope global eth0
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
inet6 fe80::c8b6:dc43:a5a6:8122/64 scope link noprefixroute
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

eth works under windows (dual boot)

after setting the IP address by hand for IPV4, eth connection was stablished

but how to make it work with DHCP??

Set in NetworkManager (Taskbar widget) the IPv6 -> Method -> Ignored.

Try again (press “Connect”/“Vebinden” for “Wired Connection 1”/ “Kabelgebundene Verbindung 1”)…

@suse_paul

Please use Code-Tags for terminal output.

See here:
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/536143-Using-Code-Tags-Around-Your-Paste

didn’t work

Journal?

Remove the whole interface from NetworkManager and create fresh with IPv6 ignored. Reboot the FrizBox…

If you change a NetworkManager connection setup (or create a new one) you probably have to restart NetworkManager

# systemctl restart network

to have the changes take effect.

Please show the complete content of the connection file “Kabelverbindung 1” (should reside in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections).

That’s not good, what does your dhcp server (router?) show in the log?

…would be helpful…

There are multiple reports about failure to acquire DHCP address using your adapter. There are several years old and it looks like kernel driver issue. You may want to file openSUSE bug report.

There are multiple different variants under this umbrella name. Always use “lspci -nn” (plus any other options as needed) to display numerical device ID to identify it.

I didn’t see anything relevant, but there were only very few events listes

strange, that I couldn’t do the inatallation then via eth
