No coherent sound opensuse 11.1

ok…i tried installing opensuse 11.0 and my network card wouldn’t work, tried installing 11.1, network works now but sound don’t work right…if i do speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav, i get a bunch of warbled intermittent tones and nothing you can understand. Using the HDA intel on a HP laptop… can anyone help me figure out where to start?

show us the outcome of :
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#2

Be a bit more specific about you hardware.
Also lspci | grep Audio would be helpful

Both as ROOT.

Typically I recommend users with sound problems try working their way through the openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSEYou may have tried that already …

If you have no success with the audio troubleshooting guide, then you could provide more detailed information on your hardware and software wrt your sound in openSUSE-11.1. … You can do that, with your PC connected to the internet, by opening a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole and typing:
/usr/sbin/alsa-info.shthat will run a diagnostic script and post the output to a web site on the Internet. It will give you the URL of the web site. Please post that URL here. (Just the URL) It may be that you need to run that script with root permissions.

Also, please copy and paste the following commands one line at a time into a gnome-terminal or a konsole and post here the output: rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
cat /proc/interrupts

ok…it’s a HP DV7-1170 laptop has
for audio part of the lspci -v output

i think that is all the info…thanks a million again[/size]

I’ve helped a couple dv7 users, and also some dv5 users, where those two HP laptops have the same Codec as your dv7, which is: IDT 92HD71B7X.

Rather than give you a bunch of explanation, lets cut right to the chase, based on experience I have in helping other HP DV5/7 users. Please change your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, such that it reads:

options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 model=hp-m4
# u1Nb.Jqboh86TqAC:82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

and then restart your PC, and test your audio. Be certain to move your sound up to 95% in both master and PCM volume controls. Use the speaker test: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavOnce you have sound, you can back off to a lower volume control level to avoid distortion.

IF that edit does not work, I will give you six zypper commands to update your alsa, and you can then try again with the updated alsa sound driver version.

There are also other model option possibilities (instead of “hp-m4”) that you can try and if necessary, I can also provide those.

Looks to me like Your card hasn’t been detected properly, at the beginning of cat should look like Realtek or something in Your case?

Try using YaST2 and sound option and if this doesn’t work try this one

Workaround for ICH9 Sound Problem on openSUSE 11.1 | Spirit of Change

Or read OldCpu’s solution first  He’s got more exp than me

BenderBendingRodriguez, thanks for trying, but that link you provided is for an AD1884A / AD1883 / AD1984A / AD1984B which is not the same hardware, and IMHO it unfortunately won’t work on jasonmichel’s HP DV7.

wow…worked like a charm…thanks a million you guys…only question i have left is this, i installed the KDE 4.1, i usually always run gnome cause its cleaner looking to me. I want to reinstall with gnome…will the same steps work…or do you know an easy way i can get gnome without having to reinstall?

thanks again

You should not have to do a re-install. You should, in YaST > Software > Software Management > filter > patterns , be able to install the gnome-base-system and gnome-graphic environment from YaST.

Then go to YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management and add a new user. Let that new user be the user account in which you access Gnome, and you can retain the old account if you still wish to access KDE-4.1.

This will mean a large download.

Next time I recommend you start a new thread on new topics, as with the appropriate title, a new thread is likely to garner superior attention from the forum gurus.

Great! I take it the edit to the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, adding the line “options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 model=hp-m4” together with the PC restart and the 95% volume check did the trick.
