No audioexcept for the sound test in Yast.

Hello. I can’t seem to get my system to play audio other than the Play test sound in the sound configuration panel of Yast. It never makes any noise when I first log in, it doesn’t play CDs and it won’t play an OggVorbis file which I downloaded to try out. My default sound card is my Creative X-Fi which plays the test sound when I choose the option and a few others that never do anything, and I’m not really bothered about anyway.

Can anyone help?

Sometimes when audio works in YaST (where root permissions are active) and not work for a regular user, it can be a permissions problem.

Hence in addition to following jdmcdaniel3’s advice, I recommend you try adding your regular user to group ‘audio’, reboot and test.

You can add your regular user to group audio via YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management > select your user > Edit > Details > check the box next to ‘audio’, press ‘OK’ , press "OK’ , close YaST and reboot.

Thanks or the help guys, but my problem is fixed. It turns out that absolutely nothing needed changing or configuring. All I had to do was apply an option that Yast audio config said was already applied. When you’re in Yast’s Audio control panel and you click the button marked “other” and the little drop-box appears, just click on the “Pulse audio Configuration…” option and a box appears with an option that is already ticked. Just click “OK” and it all starts working. I just always clicked “Cancel” in the past so as not to mess anything up.

My Wife’s sound card is a different matter, however. That doesn’t make any sound ever. But I’ll try having a look at the info you’ve posted and start a separate thread about that if needed.
