I would like to start with my system specs. uname -a gives the following output:
Linux linux-1x1i 2.6.27.23-0.1-default #1 SMP 2009-05-26 17:02:05 -0400 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
rpm -q flash-player gives the following output:
flash-player-10.0.22.87-0.1.1
My firefox is MozillaFirefox-3.0.10-3.1. I am unable to get audio output on
embedded flash videos in websites like youtube. Please help me find the problem
and solve it.
I note you updated to the 2.6.27.23-0.1-default kernel. Can you play any sound anywhere? That kernel update broke the sound on a number of user’s PCs.
I still have the older 2.6.27.21-0.1-default kernel. Also on my 64-bit openSUSE-11.1 with KDE-3.5.10 and MozillaFirefox-3.0.10-3.1 with the packman packaged mplayerplug-in-3.55-0.pm.1 and also with flash-player-10.0.22.87-0.1.1, I am able to play such imbedded flash videos.

Yeah, my sound is working fine on Amarok and kaffeine. Even before the kernel
upgrade I had this problem. So, I don’t think the kernel upgrade did anything to
cause this.

Well, even I was able to play them when I installed openSUSE 11.1 - that was
when 11.1 was new. Now, I have moved to KDE 4.2.4. I do not remember when this
happened because I run
Code:
zypper up
at times to keep my system updated and I don’t usually visit youtube, or
“flashy” sites. After a long time, today when I visited youtube, I found no
audio output.

I do not see MPlayer nor mplayerplug-in. I am able to play youtube and other embedded flash videos because I use both flash-player and mplayerplug-in (which requires MPlayer). Without mplayerplug-in I can not play such videos (and hence I have packman packaged MPlayer and mplayerplug-in).
Well, I never used MPlayer or its plugin; yet I always could play youtube
videos. Even now I can play them. Only there is no sound; the video is alright.
I’ve always (and only) used mplayerplug-in for such web videos. MPlayer and mplayerplug-in “just works”.
If you are using another media player to play the web videos, and if you wish to “tinker”, then you need to check it to see why it is not playing the audio. Check to see if you can configure its output audio mode, and if so, try different audio modes (ie often one can select oss, alsa, aRts, etc … ).

I am thinking about switching from kaffeine to smplayer. I wanted to know if I
need w32codecs on my 64-bit laptop. On my brother’s desktop I have 64-bit Gentoo
and I don’t need w32codecs; ffmpeg is enough and I can play all media.
I think I will tinker a bit first and then (may b when I have messed up enough)
switch to SMplayer.
My understanding is that kaffeine can use either the xine sound engine or the gstreamer sound engine, where the capability to choose the gstreamer sound engine is a relatively recent feature. If one is using the xine sound engine, then the codecs for that are typically provided by the dependencies of libffmpeg0 and w32codec-all. One must be certain to be consistent in their packager selection for the applications, where I normally recommend the packages packaged by the packman packagers.

I have installed mplayer, smplayer and the plugin. Have a look at the following:
flash-player-10.0.22.87-0.1.1
What plugins and what extensions do you have installed in your browser? Its very common for users (in Windows and Linux) to mistakenly install plugins or extensions that interfere with streaming.

I have uninstalled xine plugin. However, I can’t uninstall silverlight plugin.
Can you suggest a way to do it?
Hi
It’s the moonlight-plugin (application/x-silverlight Novell Moonlight).
I have it installed and play youtube video fine (note I use fluendo
codecs).

Ah, now I remember. Thank you Malcolm. Actually, the problem existed before i
installed the plugin. However, let me uninstall it and try. After all, I rarely
visit a site that needs silverlight.
Also take a hard look at what extensions you have installed, as I have read accounts where some extensions can interfere with audio and video playback.

Well I tried uninstalling silverlight, yet the problem stays. I only have
Adblock plus extension. I don’t think that would affect streaming.
