I’ve recently had network issues with desktop PC so I had to open it up to do some troubleshooting (then I found out that the WiFi card was dead). Since I put everything back together, I haven’t been able to get any sound from the jack ports. There are 3 jack ports on the back of the motherboard, and two other ones on the front of the PC. Both ports are recognized on Linux and Windows (as well as the devices connected to them) but I’m not able to get any sound from any of them, regardless of the OS. When I use open the Sound settings on Gnome, I can see that the output/input ports are recognized, and I can even “test” them, and doing so shows there is some activity going on, but I just don’t hear anything. I’m only able to hear sounds through the HDMI port.
I have both OpenSUSE 13.2 and Windows 8 installed on my PC. Here is a sample of the /var/log/messages file, the complete file is available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0By4NJzVnfa2oSnVXcFJLekpNZm8/view?usp=sharing

PS : I have a quite unrelated question : you will probably notice that I removed some of the lines of the actual log file. It seems like Gnome gets the content of some of the documents present on the hard drive. There are usually about 20,000 lines of Word documents added to the log file every time the computer boots up. I just uninstalled LibreOffice but it didn’t change anything. Any idea what’s causing that?
You have 4 devices the Intel is configured but neither of the other two is configured have you tried to configure them? Note the first is HDMI which is usually associated with the Video card/chip
Can you change the order? Note which the are remove and the reinstall them. Can all be done from that screen If possible get the one you are actually plugged into as first.
It seems like you forgot a word or two so I’m not sure I go the full meaning of your sentence. Please note that everything was working perfectly about a week ago and suddenly stopped working after I took the PC apart (there hasn’t been any update or changes in the configurations). Do you confirm that trying to reconfigure these might help?
Don’t worry, I double checked every single connection, and I actually I built this PC myself so I knew what I was doing. Unless there is something wrong with the motherboard itself (like a shortcut or something like that), it must be a software issue. Any clue about the fact that I see the content of Word documents in /var/log/messages?
Have to show us (small sample) preferably in another thread about the alleged doc files. I seriously doubt they are doc files
As to the sound problem you are showing 4 device 2 of which are not initialized. removing and re installing should kick start them Also with that many possible sound source what is plugged where is important to know but we are not there so you have to explain.
Which one(s) do you want to use? What is connected to jacks that don’t work??? Does any sound work in Yast test sound? Do you have pavulcontrol installed and what does it think is working?
I know that they are doc files because I wrote them myself. I can see the content of many of these files.
I’m going to try to change these settings and let you know.
Trying to configure any of the devices that aren’t configured gives the following error message : “The kernel module snd-hda-intel for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.” The big problem now is that I can no longer have any sound, even from the HDMI port. The “regular” sound settings don’t show any device now.
To answer your questions, none of the jacks work and I want to use all of them if possible (the ones on the back of the motherboard and the ones at the front of the case. I don’t get any sound at all from the tests and I don’t have pavulcontrol installed.
UPDATE : After rebooting the computer, I’m able to get sounds from the HDMI port, but no changes with the jack ports, which seems to be a hardware-related issue. Plugging 2 headphones, one on the rear panel and another on the front panel results in a high pitched sound on both headphones. When I plug just one, I can hear a sound like the wind. In every case, the headphones is recognized both on Windows and on Linux.
If you still have the defunct wifi card, try plugging that back in and restart the machine to see if you have sound. If you do, then I would say it’s an addressing problem in the machine itself, thinking that possibly some hardware may have shifted addresses after the net card was removed. Worth a try…
The Wifi card is actually plugged in, but not used. I just activated it, but I don’t get any sound (actually I get that high pitch sound in the headphones)
